1. Park Rangers and Cops Begin Evicting Protesters
http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/10/05/park-rangers-begin-evicting-protesters

Originally posted at 2:12 PM: With a phalanx of cops standing by, park rangers at the Occupy Seattle protests in Westlake Park "are going from tent to tent, telling protesters to take their tents down so they can clean the whole park and telling them that they will not be able to set their tents back up once the park is clean," reports Paul Constant. Only eight tents remain standing, he says, but protesters say they intend to wait until 7:00 p.m. and set up their tents again.

"It's getting very hectic here," Paul says. Lots of people are chanting: "We are the 99 percent."

UPDATE at 2:20 PM: Police are encircling the tents as park rangers dismantle the tents, Paul reports. Around the circle of cops and rangers are larger circles of protesters, who are chanting. The cops are in regular uniform, Paul says, not riot gear.

2. The status quo will fight like hell to squelch the movement
but we can't let that stop us. There are more of us than there are of them.

3. Take one of us away: 10 more will be there tomorrow, and so on and so on and so on
This is not going to end because of a few tents or a few (hundred, thousand) arrests.

The politicians of this nation (federal, state and local) have pushed the middle class and the poor beyond the limit of what we can stand. Now we stand up! Now we show you what 300 million Red, White and Blue Americans can do!

Spread that message...

8. Mayor's statement...
http://mayormcginn.seattle.gov/mayor%E2%80%99s-statement-on-westlake-park-protest/
Mayor’s Statement on Westlake Park Protest

I support the efforts of the protesters at Westlake Park to address this country’s economic situation. In my budget speech last week, I stated:

“We are facing unprecedented inequality in this country. It is always true that bad times are harder on the poor. But we have not seen income inequality this great since 1928, the year before the Great Depression started. The top 1% control 34% of the nation’s wealth. The top 10% control 2/3rds of the nation’s wealth. It is an unprecedented grab by the most powerful to get a bigger share of a shrinking pie.”

I also support the right to protest, and I support the right to protest at Westlake Park. Individuals and groups are welcome to continue exercising free speech rights.

Like all of our parks, Westlake Park is owned by the people of Seattle. No one group can use a park to the exclusion of others, no matter how worthy the cause. Day in and day out, Westlake Park is heavily used by the public. In the coming days and weeks there are several events and protests that have received a permit to use Westlake Park. This includes a group with a permit to mark the ten year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan and a group with a permit to mark International Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Erecting tents in the park has the effect of displacing others who have a right to be there. Therefore, we will be asking those who have set up tents in Westlake Park to remove them.

10. Event Organizers Condemn Mayor for Using Them as an Excuse to Arrest Occupy Seattle Protesters
http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/10/04/progressive-event-organizers-condemn-mayor-for-using-them-as-an-excuse-to-arrest-occupy-seattle-protesters

Now the permit holders of those events, organizers for ANSWER Seattle and Native Peoples' Alliance with Friends and Allies, are firing back at McGinn, accusing him of a "transparent attempt to pit progressive causes against each other." Here's their statement:

Jane Cutter, coordinator of ANSWER Seattle (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and Jack Whitehouse of the Native Peoples' Alliance with Friends and Allies, have stated in no uncertain terms that their organizations support “Occupy Seattle” and welcome the presence of “Occupy Seattle” in their scheduled, permitted events at Westlake on Friday Oct. 7 and Saturday Oct. 8.

Jane Cutter of ANSWER Seattle stated, “We urge no one to be fooled by this transparent attempt to pit progressive causes against each other. We see the Occupy Seattle protest as being one and the same with our planned Oct. 7 protest against the 10th anniversary of the Afghan War. In fact, our young ANSWER activists in New York City were among those arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge on Oct. 1 with the Occupy Wall Street protest. It's time to 'unoccupy Afghanistan' and support the poor, not the war.
“Similarly, our brothers and sisters in the Native Peoples Alliance with Friends and Allies, which is hosting the Oct. 8 Indigenous People's Day event, see the Occupy Seattle protest for social justice as interconnected with their cause which is justice for Indigenous people and political prisoners.”
