Culprit sought after whale shot, washes up in NJ

BRIGANTINE, N.J. (AP) -- Rescuers knew something was seriously wrong with the short-finned pilot whale when it beached itself on the New Jersey shore.

The nearly 11-foot-long whale, which was near death, weighed about 740 pounds but should have easily tipped the scales at more than 1,000 pounds. It died shortly after police responded, but it wasn't until a necropsy was performed that the shocking cause of death was revealed.

Someone had shot the whale.

The wound near its blow hole had closed and faded somewhat, indicating the animal had been shot as long as a month ago, said Bob Schoelkopf, co-director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. The bullet lodged in the whale's jaw, causing an infection that left it unable to eat.

I can't count the times I have done terrestrial surveys and found dead squirrels and chipmunks littering the lay of the land. A shooter told me they like "plinking" varmints.

6. Your sexual metaphors, at a minimum, do not account for female hunters...

But I suppose that is not your point when you use them.

You can always find examples of canned hunts; but the majority of hunts result in no game killed, and those hunts which are successful are usually done in a fair-chase manner; i.e., not "canned."

BTW, I have taken 2 "exotic" species (in both cases, axis deer originally from India). I shot them while conducting a "still" hunt, the more difficult of hunting techniques. Do you know what a "still" hunt is? Or "posting up?" Or from a blind or stand?

Your "hundreds, if not thousands..." seems to suggest you are not quite sure about the rather grand numerical scope you claim is on Google.
