NY police: Wear pants to ward off sexual assault
Source: Raw Story
By Kase Wickman

Police officers in Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood, where several sexual attacks have occurred in recent months, are amping up their nighttime presence and offering a more unusual form of protection: wardrobe advice.

According to the Wall Street Journal, one 25-year-old woman was stopped with two other women recently. The 25-year old was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, while the other two women wore dresses.

"He pointed at my outfit and said, 'Don't you think your shorts are a little short?'" the woman said. "He pointed at their dresses and said they were showing a lot of skin."

Their clothing, the officer said, would provide "easy access" for the at-large attackers.

illustrious face-macing NYPD career. :patriot:

3. If an officer that worked for me said that to anyone, I would investigate
the officer.

I'm suspicious of anyone that holds that attitude. Not just because it is sexist and demonstrates a desire to blame the victim. It's warped thinking...and to actually accost women and say it? That's just plain creepy.

5. Here's some better advice:
Edited on Fri Sep-30-11 02:14 PM by undeterred
Dress comfortably, including shoes, and have your wits about you. Don't wear a headset- that way you don't hear someone come up behind you. Keep your hands free if possible, and have your keys in hand before you get to your car or apartment door.

And- don't drink or use drugs around people you don't know and trust.

11. If I had a daughter I would teach her
Bladed combat and make sure she carries with her a sword or axe at all times.
I'd paint them fashionable colors if she insisted that they didn't go with her outfits...(Even she-WolfDaemons can have a fashion sense )

More serious note, I agree with your post and we really need to get that kind of info out to more young people (not that older people don't need it too).

Alas, Babylon. Who among us will they sacrifice to the Gods today before they head out to the Hamptons for the weekend?

16. Bullshit.
Blaming victims for the actions of their assailants -- old, sad story.

I was wearing a heavy wool coat, two sweaters, wool slacks and winter boots. My ensemble didn't deter my attacker in the least, but one of the police officers insisted that I "must have done something" to entice the guy. I'd kinda hoped things had gotten better since the 1960s.

17. The attacks here are real
and our neighborhood is banding together to do what it can to help the women of the hood out. I have mixed emotions about the advice from cops because it does sound like it's victim blaming, but the attacks are real and they are all sexual in nature. Using some common sense when walking home late at night/early in the morning (including being prepared to defend oneself) isn't terrible. But I hate how the cops have been slow to do anything in our neighborhood in the first place, and some of them are such douchebags that they sound like they'd blame the victim.

18. Rape and all other attacks are crimes which should be prosecuted to the full extent. HOWEVER...
Edited on Fri Sep-30-11 02:56 PM by Sarah Ibarruri
Just like I don't leave my purse open when I walk around, and I opt for a purse-backpack to avoid being pickpocketed, we women shouldn't be idiots either.

Mentally ill, perverted, criminal men are NOT going to stop for a moment and ponder, "Uh, let's see... rape is wrong whether the woman is wearing shorts or not." Mentally ill, perverted, criminal men are going to rape anyway, and between prey that is going to be a problem to rape, and prey that will be easy to rape, guess which one they will opt for.

However, telling people what to wear is stupid and insinuating someone 'deserved' rape is criminal.

23. I agree that the police could have handled this better.
But a rapist is on the loose in that neighborhood. He has attacked several women already and tends to attack women who dress a certain way. Until this guy is caught, I don't think it's unreasonable to warn women in that neighborhood not to dress in the way that tends to attract this guy.

24. THIS IS BETTER THAN WARDROBE ADVICE FOR STOPPING RAPE

http://blog.mamashealth.com/2010/07/08/if-only-i-had-teeth-down-there/

This might just be a better way to ward off sexual assault
than a little wardrobe advice. This happens a couple of times
and it just might stop the assaults. If it is a serial
assaulter, it is only going to take one time. Unless he is one
sadistic SOB, and in that case he is going to have to wait 20
to 50 years depending on how many convictions he has.

CHEAP OR IS THIS SOMETHING YOU CAN USE LIKE A DIAPHRAGM UNTIL
IT IS NEEDED AND IMPLANTED?
