4. We do the same thing with large segments of the underclass
Humans are entitled to the same barbaric treatment, and we are surprised and fearful when one of them turns against the society that spawned them. And if they band together, we call them a gang, and then it's open season.

6. Right on target...
I really like pitbulls and find this whole phenomenon (and the ignorance behind it) to be just dismal. I had to laugh/cry when a DUer stated that they "had never heard of pitbulls until about 20 years ago..." which tells one all you need to know about how the media has propagated and escalated the paranoia...

(Petey, the gentle pitbull from Our Gang/Little Rascals comedies circa 1929)

It makes me so sad to see these beautiful beasts with their ears all wrapped up after the brutality... I glare at the owners when I can. Idiots.

But, dobermans and other "aggressive-status symbol" breeds continue to be mutilated.

28. Any dog can be mean. it's just depends on who raises them.
I am a dog lover. I have three dogs. All terriers.

Two males and one female. All raised in a loving environment and all loving and well behaved.

Two of the three are rescues, who came to me from a very bad place and who are healthy and happy.

I cherish them

But pit bulls get a horrible rep and I don't think it is fair and it will take public awareness of the breed to change how pit bulls are viewed and treated.

Just my two cents.

25. The problem is irresponsible pet owners
Not just the ones who let their dogs run unleashed, and their cats roam outside, but those owners who treat their animal like substitute human children who never grow up.

I don't give a damn how cuddly, wuddly and cute your precious little Fido or Flower is to you, they are NOT human beings. Yes I know you REALLY love them because they are substitute human children who never grow up. They are eternally dependent on you. You can lavish attention and affection on them. They give you love and affection without criticism. Unlike human children who WILL leave, or tell you you're full of shit.

Some pets in this country are better fed, housed and medically cared for than humans.

I don't like dog owners who let their dogs run unleashed and then scream their outrage when the dog gets shot by a cop for trying to bite someone.

I don't like cat owners who let their cats roam outside killing songbirds, because said owners are anthropomorphizing with their cat's desire "to be free".

I don't like owners who let their animals roam, then scream their outrage when the animal gets run over by a vehicle, and they curse the driver.

I like animals fine as long as people regard them as animals and not as human beings.

It's just the type of owners I describe above who I dislike.

29. Just to point out
Most of the people who do those things do them because they DON'T care for their pet. Not because they have sugary ideas about the animal needing freedom.

Most of us who have pets and CARE about them act in just about the exact opposite way as described above.

34. All true. My dogs have been fixed and licensed and kept in a fenced backyard.
They are up to date on their vacs and micro chipped. I don't allow them to fun free. They are never out of my sight.

However, and you won't like this, my pets are part of my family and I treat them as such.

I certainly agree with all your points re: responsible pet ownership, BUT, who are you to tell people how to feel towards their pets?

Having dealt with many an elderly or isolated sick individual whose only regular companion, at the end of their full lives, was their dog/cat, I'll be damned if I will let that comment go. It is often the ONLY thing that keeps them going and I revere the pets who make their lives worth living, no matter how difficult it might be. If treating that beloved dog or cat as they would their own child brings them happiness, who are you to denounce them?

I have found people who truly love animals to be the kindest, most compassionate people in the word--to both animals and other people. I'll take more of them, thank you very much.

46. Yes, the dog is the one I fear if it is eating my face in unprovoked rage!
Edited on Sat Oct-01-11 10:33 AM by rustydog
BUT, we do have to stop these damned puppy mills, we have to severely punish those who train fighting dogs. Why not do what the officials did early on in the war on drugs; seize the property of puppy mill owners, seize property of those who train fighting dogs and sell them at auction? Seize their bank accounts, go after their financial backers with a vengeance.

But once the dog learns fighting is ok, yes, you have to fear the animal, rightly so. When I was about 5 years old I was bit in the face by a dog, yes, you fear the dog.
When I was 15 I was attacked on the street by a trucking Co. Guard dog that got out of the fenced enclosure, I feared the dog.
