Another Earthquake (3.3) on Hayward Fault
Felt it here in the Oakland Hills - 3 miles from quake. There's been a slew of little ones on the Hayward over the past few weeks, it's making me a bit nervous.

1. Just because the Hayward has a high probability of ripping the Bay Area into shreds...
why worry? :o

Every shake makes me jittery for a few minutes but I've learned to stop worrying about whether it's a precursor for "the big one." I can prepare for it but I can't predict it.

2. I keep hoping that the little ones are reducing the local stress
so that we don't have a big one....

3. Read A Dangerous Place: California's Unsettling Fate by Marc Reisner....
and you'll become even more alarmed.

A sizable rip on the north end of the Hayward fault could become a disaster of epic proportions.

7. We Moved Here from New England. Every Year They Have this thing Called Winter
All the roads are covered with ice and snow there, and nonetheless we were all expected to drive on them.

Boston drivers realize that driving in ice and snow is dangerous,
so they drive extra fast to try to get out of danger as soon as possible.

Methinks their snow, ice, and bad drivers are more of a hazard over time than our earthquakes.
And now they've got earthquakes too.

9. A huge rip on the North Hayward fault will impact the entire state
Southern California will be pissed when the water they steal from Northern California becomes tainted with salt after the Delta levees liquefy and fail, allowing bay water to surge in.

10. Winter is a generally reliable, predictable natural occurence.
Winter storms don't destroy massive levels of infrastructure in one fell swoop. Winter storms don't make vast tracts of housing uninhabitable for months or years.

6. Didn't Feel It, But I Was Out Riding Some Singletrack At the Time
It was on the other side of the Bay, and I was on my mountain bike riding a singletrack trail at the time.
Probably wouldn't have noticed a 3.3 if I had ridden right over it.

11. Felt it in SF --
but I am close to the bay side of the city and was sitting watching TV when it happened. Increased activity on a fault makes me a bit nervous, too. :scared:

12. you felt a 3.3 in SF? you must be new
are yuo sure it wasn't just a large truck passing by?
3.3's are tiny, to the point of only being feel able by the uninitiated.
sorry to tease.
it actually is a potential major deal.

However there were a buncha micro swarms in pissburg about 10/12 years ago... i mean HUNDREDS over a week, and nothing happened there.
Sometimes these small swarms are good.

better a hundred 1 to 3 pointers, than one 6 pointer

13. Better dozens of six- pointers then one eight-pointer
The Hayward fault has that potential. It is not a matter of if, but only a matter of when.
