13. People who want to see Elizabeth Warren in the Senate do need to get to the edge,
because she first, has to get through a primary, and second, get past the Nekkid Senator.

Complacency is the biggest danger, here. I've seen a lot of people with the attitude that this is a "done deal." It is NOT. Yes, she has national backing and some good money donors, but she has work to do--like getting past a field of local primary candidates. So, if people get a little discombobulated, that's a good thing. It'll keep 'em on their game.

To be clear, I support EW in this contest.

NOT. She is one of FIVE vying for the seat, and some of the candidates have more "local" face than she does.

This is not a done deal. From a distance, some think it is, though. Bob Massie just got the endorsement of the Mayor of Slummerville....and he's not unpopular.

Everywhere I look on this board, people who do not live in MA seem to think that EW is the "nominee" to run against Brown. That is not anywhere near the truth. She has to get past five other candidates, and two of them (at least) are going to give her some serious trouble.

Bob Massie has not been sitting on his ass. He's on the move. Get a load of his website/endorsements:

http://www.bobmassie.org/

Tip O'Neill said it, and he is right--all politics is local. You can't sit on your laurels. People on DU are making an uninformed assumption that she's a shoe-in, and that's just not true. She has some major work to do. She is not KNOWN here. This is not going to be easy.

He wasn't polling well enough to stay in, and the money wasn't there.

Don't think this nom belongs to EW--she is going to have to work for it.

It was the implied part about EW dropping out that I didn't fall for.

Actually, I'm heartened that there is some real competition for this nomination. It shows that the Mass. Democrats are
now treating this Senate seat as one they are seriously willing to fight for.

34. Go look at Bob Massie's website. He's been working for the past year.
He's REAL competition. He has a great story, a great profile, and lots of friends.

EW is not going to win this just by having moneyed friends on a national level. She has to "get local" or she will be fucked. People need to truly understand this--she is late to the party. If I got a few people's balls in an uproar, that's good--people need to be shook up.

There wasn't anything at all implied by me--more people in Massachusetts probably recognize Setti Warren by face and name than they do EW. That's not a slam against her, that is just the truth. For those who DO recognize her, and they are growing by the day, that's great, but she cannot sit back and expect her national profile to carry her. She knows this, but her supporters need to understand it as well.

I remain encouraged that such qualified people are vying for this nomination. It says that everyone expects Scott Brown
to be history after the election, or else they wouldn't be trying so hard for the nomination.

For the record, I don't live in Mass, and Texas politics is a relative basket case by comparison, but I take my summer
vacations in Massachusetts every year, and do care about what happens there.

I'm glad he dropped out because I wasn't comfortable with having two people with the same last name on the ballot; it added a potential for someone unintentionally marking the wrong spot.

I didn't know that Joe Trippi was involved with the Massie campaign. Is that Curtatone backing him as well? Interesting. He spoke to my Democratic Town Committee earlier in the year. He has a very compelling story, the kind of story people often respond to. Many of the candidates spoke to our committee; I did like all of them but nobody stood out to me. But I did get excited when I heard that Elizabeth Warren's running. I met some folks working on her campaign, put my name on an email list to get information, and I hope to volunteer. I also told them about DU and that a lot of people here love Elizabeth Warren. (I'm always amazed at how many people, including political folks, are unaware of DU.)

31. See--all politics IS local!!
Yes, Trippi is running Massie's campaign, and Curtatone has formally endorsed him. AND he has been on the move, making campaign stops, shaking hands, organizing, for at least eight months if not longer. He is a formidable candidate with, as you note, a compelling story. Some people might think he was "anointed" or "saved" to do good in the Senate. He's not a bad guy, certainly, but he is serious, significant competition for EW. People who aren't from MA (or even NH, RI, the border states that get channels in the Boston market) have the idea that no one else is running, and that it will be a cakewalk for EW, and nothing could be further from the truth.

She has a long road ahead. She needs all the support she can muster.

43. He's from the Winter Hill neighborhood-Massie has a pretty fair profile, too. He's got a
lot of "noble public service" going for himself, to say nothing of overcoming personal medical adversity in a big way, to the point where if he were Catholic, it would be certified as a frigging miracle by the Vatican. Oh, and he's an Episcopal priest, too!

He has a strong resume and he's liked. Talk about an embarrassment of riches in the Bay State this time around...!

Here's an interview he gave back in Jan, right after he announced, with a pic--I'll bet he's the guy you met:

I liked him all right but wasn't necessarily moved toward his candidacy, though I'm not certain why.

41. You will remember the subtext of this thread, I do hope?
Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. I hope you and anyone else who wants to see EW sitting in Ted's chair will transmit some of the urgency I've tried to communicate in this thread.

Remember how smug and sure of ourselves we were about a Gore Presidency? Who ever thought it could close enough to steal? That Wee Cowboy was a MORON!!!!!!!

EW needs to slog through a hard primary with a couple of WINNERS competing for the seat--and by winners, I mean QUALITY candidates, not snark-winners. We know how all politics is local, these guys have been on the ground for quite some time, raising money, awareness and developing friendships. Joe Friken Trippi, Howard Dean's campaign wizard, tanned, rested and ready, is running Massie's campaign--and it is very polished and forward moving.

This is not going to be a stroll to the nom for EW. She's going to have to claw, push, and do more/better/faster. She's going to need some help. People who support her need to understand that, and understand that it's not an anointment.

My goal is to jolt a few people to attention, I hope I've done that.

48. Not if you're from Massachusetts, it isn't!
Setti Warren was in the race FIRST, way before EW even started to explore a run. He's a well-known MA Mayor with a high local profile, very charming, handsome and dynamic.

The headline is only misleading to out-of-staters...and they're the ones, who, if they want EW in Ted's seat, need to chip in and make a donation to her candidacy so she can play catch-up. She is WAY behind at least two of the five primary candidates, who have both name recognition and a following.

56. Not evil...good! Read the whole thread!
He is actually the "better known" Warren in MA. What he doesn't have is the cash base. He's a mayor of a very nice town (the place that gave Fig Newtons their name) and he's liked...he's just not liked enough, and he knows damn well that it would be a waste of his time to keep at it. The name confusion was probably just one more "Awwwww, shit" aspect for him.

There are five candidates in addition to EW running, still. Two of them I regard as formidable, so she has some catching up to do.

I have a municipal election that I'm working on right now and I usually head to a swing state for the big elections but I want to stay on the east coast this year. Hopefully I find a way to help put on either Warren, Murphy or Lewis' campaign in that order. It used to e you had to go to a swing state to get any good action but the rules changed with citizens united and Scott Brown, and we have to hold the North East and win back that seat if we are going to stand a chance.
