GOP congressman Don Young wants to repeal all regulations since 1991

Republican congressman Don Young, Alaska's sole House Representative, said Tuesday he was working on legislation to repeal all regulations that have been put into effect since 1991, the Anchorage Daily News reports.

Young, who is 78 years old and has served in the House of Representatives since 1973, said the bill was "very simple."

"I just null and void any regulations passed in the last 20 years," he said during remarks at the Anchorage Downtown Rotary Club. "I picked 20 years ago because it crossed party lines and also we were prosperous at that time. And no new regulations until they can justify them."

Young spokesman Luke Miller said in an e-mailed statement that the legislation, which "is currently being developed," aims to "reverse the regulatory overreach by the executive branch."

4. Folly, and nothing but a stunt, because...
...a Democratic Senate isn't going to pass this.

Sorry, but I don't get why the press and the public doesn't simply vilify the GOP House for wasting everyone's time on things that are done just to make a point, to score points, to posture, to run out the clock. If the GOP really wanted to create jobs, they wouldn't be defunding Planned Parenthood and eliminating all post-1991 rules.

5. Wow. What intense logic and critical thinking on display there -
when you compare his mental meanderings to a bran muffin's. It's all relative.

10. Yup, and it's quite clear
That bran muffin plus a potted plant have more of a brain than he apparently does.

6. I'm willing to entertain the notion if he'll open the floor to amendments
I'd like to add an amendment that completely resurrects the Glass-Steagall Act prohibition against consolidation between investment banks and commercial banks.

Anyone else got amendments to add?

8. They don't give a damn about people's lives
The current poutrage running throughout the RW blogosphere has to do with regulations concerning endangered hardwoods used in the manufacture of Gibson guitars, whose management is openly flouting the law. When the lawbreakers get raided by the USJD, the wingnutz come a'runnin' to their defense.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2011/08/31/140090116/why-gibson-guitar-was-raided-by-the-justice-department

Think they can work up much in the way of concern for people's lives? Not so much.

9. There have to be some unintended consequences in doing something so sweeping.
Obviously this will never pass, but even proposing something so sweeping is irresponsible.

How can blindly repealing 20 years of regulations not have some unintended consequences?

22. No, that'll stay in effect
What he REALLY means is all regulations that prevent corporations from systematically abusing the environment, the populace, and employees to extract the maximum profit will be repealed.

Any regulation that allows a company to profit will remain on the books.
