Bush Co. Judge upholds Alabama Immigration law.
Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn who was appointed by Bush 41 http://judgepedia.org/index.php/Sharon_Blackburn ruled that the Alabama Immigration law was OK, with a few exceptions. http://blog.al.com/breaking/2011/09/federal_judge_throws_out_xxxx.html

Blackburn upheld a provision of the state law related to police stops and detentions of people suspected of being in the country illegally.

She also upheld sections requiring schools to check the citizenship status of children and sections that would nullify contracts knowingly entered into with unauthorized aliens.

Blackburn also upheld a section making it a felony for "an alien not lawfully present in the United States" to apply for a license plate, driver's license, business license or other business license.

So racism is alive and well in the courts, and allowed by law in Alabama. Cue the Republicans talking about the old south new south in 5, 4, 3, 2,

2. Jeepers, should Sharon Blackburn be Masha's sister, it would be no surprise: surely Masha would
applaud this ruling in kindred spirit. :patriot:

4. NPR: A federal judge has blocked some provisions and allowed others.
A federal judge in Birmingham, Ala., has blocked some provisions of a controversial immigration law in the state — most notably those that would "make it a state crime to harbor immigrants and make it a misdemeanor to work in the state" — the Montgomery Advertiser reports.

Other parts of the law were upheld. The newspaper adds that:

"U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Blackburn said the federal government had not met requirements to enjoin sections that make it a crime to not carry documentation, allow law enforcement to detain those they find to have 'reasonable suspicion' of being in the country illegally after stops; require schools to collect information on the immigration status of students and forbid state and local agencies from doing business with undocumented aliens."

As NPR's Debbie Elliott reported in August:

"The state's Republican leaders say they passed the toughest immigration bill in the country to preserve jobs for Alabamians. But critics say the law goes too far, criminalizing all kinds of contact with undocumented residents and putting an extra burden on small business."

5. Pappy Bush even created a SPECIAL Judgeship for her.
"Blackburn was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama by President George H.W. Bush on April 11, 1991 to a new judgeship created by 104 Stat. 5089, which was approved by Congress. Blackburn was confirmed by the Senate on May 24, 1991 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 30, 1991.<2> Blackburn has been Chief Judge of the Court since 2006."

Judgepedia is a cool source.
