3. They have closed it indefinitely; physical exam 'final' in 2 days or so.
No 'determination' on nature or extent of damage yet.

Engineers prepare to rappel down Washington Monument to inspect earthquake damage

By Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Structural engineers are expected to begin rappelling down the Washington Monument to check on damage caused by last month’s earthquake.

The inspection of the monument’s exterior was delayed a day because of lightning. A team worked for several hours setting up equipment and creating a protective barrier around the monument’s lightning rods.

Associated Press? Couldn't the WaPo send someone down the street to cover this? Let's try this one:

5. Some 'office!'
“There was a storm coming,” he said. “They told us it was 40 miles away, and it was getting near our 30-mile threshold . . . so we decided to retreat. . . . Lightning’s our biggest concern up there.”

He said it was “very cool” to be atop the monument, “a unique place to be” but also “just a day in the life of my job.”
