3. GREAT refutation!!! Would that more points here on DU could be made as succinctly.

.
The tools chosen were wrong (shame... as it's such a clever "quote") -- the
point still remains (see "Galileo").

.
.
I'm sure glad I added the "attributed to" disclaimer at the bottom (I almost
did not) -- the original picture did not have that.

5. Galileo, too!

I call it "hypercrap": stuff that flies ABOVE the radar, bullshit that gets perpetuated because it's spread by oft-self-promoting "bullshit detectors." Probably the best example is the Tribune Brain Model: really less valid than phrenology, people cite it to this very day, explaining conservatism as "R-complex," almost solely because of Carl Sagan's 1977 Dragons of Eden. It's like birtherism for leftists, liberals, and atheists.
In the name of "science," Paul Gross and Norman Levitt tell you not to listen to experts or anyone with nuanced or complex views, since they're just trying to fool you into thinking they're smart--the exact same dynamic that drives creationism and warming denialism, and no less anti-intellectual (however you define that) than the Haggards and Van Impes and LaHayes.

6. You had me at "flat-earth" -- Galileo. not so much.
.
.
.
Though that wiki article DOWNPLAYS the "exaggeration of the significance
of the Galileo incident", it doesn't deny that it happened, nor that he
was sentenced for heresy and sentenced (among other things) to prison --
which was commuted to house arrest... a sentence he serve until the end
of his life.
