Rebel Flag Still Flying in Black SC Neighborhood
http://news.yahoo.com/rebel-flag-still-flying-black-sc-neighborhood-075154630.html

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A year ago, dozens marched to protest the Confederate flag a white woman flew from her porch in a historically black Southern neighborhood. After someone threw a rock at her porch, she put up a wooden lattice. That was just the start of the building.

Earlier this year, two solid 8-foot high wooden fences were built on either side of Annie Chambers Caddell's modest brick house to shield the Southern banner from view.

Late this summer, Caddell raised a flagpole higher than the fences to display the flag. Then a similar pole with an American flag was placed across the fence in the yard of neighbor Patterson James, who is black.

One hundred and fifty years after the Civil War began about 20 miles away in Charleston Harbor, fights continue over the meaning of the Confederate flag. Some see it as a symbol of slavery and racism; others like Caddell say it's part of their Southern heritage.

1. "it's part of their Southern heritage"
THat's just an excuse. I have Confederate ancestors like many other Southerners, White Southerners as well as Black Southerners. But, everyone with Southern Heritage does not feel a need to display a symbol of treason and hate.

2. Some of my ancestors were Confederates too.
However, I don't recall anyone in my family ever seeing the need to fly the rebel flag. Even if I wanted to fly it myself, I wouldn't do it in a black neighborhood. That is way beyond rude.

13. Best response to the "heritage" assertion evah
I saw it here on DU many years ago, and I'm sorry I didn't note who posted it. When the "heritage" assertion was put forward, the poster said, "Well, my great-great-granddaddy was in the 131st Indiana Irregulars (or some such outfit), and so it's my heritage to fire on any sumbitch flying that traitorous rag." I thought it was pitch perfect.

3. This Southerner finds
that flag offensive. It belongs in a museum, in the movies, but not proudly displayed in neighborhoods, regardless if they are black or white neighborhoods. The South lost the war, over nearly 150 years ago and still idiots proudly wave and display it. THese are the same folks who bash the French as no longer being miliary powers, the Germans don't wave and display the Swastika, they lost the war. But leave it to Southern racists to proudly, defiantly wave and display the Stars and Bars, which lost the war by the way...Makes me nuts, no dignity....

7. I see it as a flag of treason..
They took up arms against their country. I guess america did the exact same thing but we won our cause so the charge of treason is no longer applicable.. I would bet if we would have lost the war england would not be very fond of our stars and stripes either...

15. The Confederate Flag is one that deserves to be burned.
In this case, flag-desecration is a good thing.

11. It's a free country with free speech which I think covers this
not to mention private property (not public). Under those conditions she can fly any flag she wants.

20. and some people think Nazi flags are part of their Aryan "heritage".
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 01:26 PM by provis99
This woman is the equivalent of a person waving a Nazi flag.

Funny how they always say it's Southern heritage, as if only whites counted as Southern, and blacks have no Southern heritage.

21. My next door neighbor has a swastika flag that can be seen from the street -
- he has it inside his house but on a wall across from his picture window. You see it every time you drive by and its very prominent at night with his interior lights on.

We just consider him a wacky neighbor and don't bother with him. It's his house - his property - his flag. He can do as he wishes and I can choose to ignore it as it doesn't change who I am or influence me in any way. Same thing with this woman. She's the wacky neighbor and she can do as she wishes on her property. The more people complain, the more they draw attention to her.

You don't see any Yahoo stories on my wacky neighbor, do you???
