Science fiction author James Blish on negative criticism

He was once asked how he dealt with it. He said that if a serious critic said that a particular work was bad, s/he should explain in detail how and why it was bad. If the critic didn't do that it wasn't "negative criticism," or any kind of criticism at all--it was simply abuse.

it's a good point, distinguishing between actual criticism and abuse, but strictly speaking it doesn't answer the question.
