Mark Zuckerberg gives money directly to teachers!!!!
NEW JERSEY: Facebook Funds Go to Teachers (Wall Street Journal - September 21)

Some of the $100 million Mark Zuckerberg gave the Newark, N.J. school system a year ago will be shared directly with public school teachers. The foundation that manages the grant money will announce on Wednesday that a two-year, $600,000 program will provide grants to teachers who come up with innovative classroom programs.

This is the same guy that was crucified on this board for giving 100 million on Oprah's show to New Jersey. Everyone accused this billionaire of supporting charters over teachers. This guy wants to make a difference and he is putting his money where he thinks it will do some good. I hope those that were attacking him will now give some kudos where kudos are due.

1. Let me speculate about what he mean by "innovative"
Merit pay

Value added something or other

Union members need not apply

Testing, testing and more testing

etc

etc

etc

:)

2. Negative, and more negative. This is going directly to public teachers!!! It does not say no union
teachers. This is why it is hard to listen to those who only tear down anyone who tries to get involved. You only want to find the bad in a 100 million dollar donation. 600,000 to go directly to teachers with ideas that they can present. Wow. Aren't you a teacher? Don't you have a million ideas to make the system better.

Instead of moaning a groaning on this board maybe do something like suggest it to someone with the money to make it happen.

3. LOL. You're naive. Or something else. Wait & see where the money goes.

Zuckerberg himself is the handpuppet of larger forces, & they have the donors & their "programs" all picked out.

In Christie's NJ.

14. I've been in the education business for 3 decades. I've seen this crap over and over.
Never once have any of these suddenly wealthy wanting to help philanthropists asked teachers what we want, what we need. They either do no research or fund their own studies (how scientific is that) and then swoop in with all their money to save our children.

And
It
Never
Works

Bill Gates came to my district. He had a wonderful program and he was taking time from curing malaria to personally implement his miracle. So schools were upended, programs were canceled to make room for Bill's ideas, teachers were fired, and they even changed the district calendar, inconveniencing tens of thousands of families. Exactly one year later Bill decided something different was the real answer and left as quickly as he had arrived. I can't tell you if his program worked because it had just barely started when it was halted. But many years later I can tell you about the harm it did.

The answer isn't a billionaire philanthropist. The answer is a community that demands adequate funding and programs that are time tested and proven successful. Tell Facebook dude to stay out of my schools. Thank you very much.

Why can't these rich folks build libraries like Carnegie? You can't fuck up a library. :)

6. I would love for you to be right Pisces
but I'm afraid you're being terribly naive. I suspect the truth about this project can be found in what they have OMITTED to tell the public about it. And if I'm not mistaken, what little we do know about it has been obtained only because the community there filed a Freedom of Information suit.

7. I am sure a lot of the money is going to open up charter schools for troubled teens similar to the
ones that have opened in other big cities with poor urban schools. I am not deceived by this, but some of the money is now being directed towards public school teachers with good ideas. I know that Chris Christie is the governor, but Corey Booker is also involved. He is all about the people.

I tire of the all or nothing arguments about education on this board. As a parent I just want the best for my child right now. I want them to learn the tools that will help them succeed in the future.

Newark Charter School Fund spending more on itself than it's giving out
Tuesday, 28 December 2010 09:42

BY JOE TYRRELL
NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM
In its first two years of operation, the Newark Charter School Fund spent more on consultants and internal compensation than it gave in grants to local schools.

Tax records show that administrative expenses accounted for 42.6 percent of the fund's expenditures in 2008-09, which non-profit monitors describe as an unusually high amount.

While putting almost $2.4 million into compensation for its own officers, staff salaries and consulting fees, the fund gave barely half that to individual schools.

Charity Navigator of Glen Rock, N.J., analyzes more than 5,500 non-profits with at least $1 million in annual revenues. "Most of them spend only about 15 percent on administration," said Sandra Miniutti, the organization's vice president for marketing.

In an era when some non-profits try to create the appearance of efficiency by classifying overhead costs as projects or services, "it's almost refreshing that someone is admitting that so little is going to programs," said Mike Elmaleh, an accountant and auditor of non-profit groups. "In a twisted way, it's very honest."
The largest single recipient of NCSF money over the two years was the New York-based New Leaders for New Schools, where fund partner Mashea Ashton was executive director and remains a senior advisor. The organization recruits and trains aspiring principals, often through year-long residencies with mentors.

Launched with fanfare in April 2008 with the backing of deep-pocket private foundations, the NCSF has seen the limelight stolen by an even more dramatic bit of philanthropy, Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's $100 million pledge to Newark schools in September 2010.

The fund's record illuminates the challenges facing the Partnership for Education in Newark as it begins implementing the Zuckerberg program by spending $1 million on public outreach.

While PEN seeks public input, the fund has adopted an increasingly low profile. For almost two years prior to the Zuckerberg announcement, the NCSF did not post a news release, press report or staff interview on its website.

Asked earlier this year what grants the fund was providing to Newark schools and groups, fund officials declined to answer. After back-and-forth over why the question was being asked, fund spokesman Bruno Tedeschi said, "We're conducting an internal review as to how much information we have to give out."

The NCSF did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

The NCSF is one of a growing network of philanthropic groups formed with the backing of Newark Mayor Cory Booker....Booker's education aide, De'Shawn Wright, left to become a partner in the fund, although his future there is uncertain after being named deputy mayor for education in Washington, D.C. on December 22.

9. Great.
Now if he'd only divert the $700K going directly to charter schools, and the $350K going to integrate charter and public schools with shared campuses, straight to the teachers.

13. It is probably for "Teach for America" Teachers
The new army of teachers with 4 weeks of training who are wired by ear to get help in the classroom.

They are taking over the teaching jobs of veteran teachers, only they get an additional stipend to pay off their student loans.

zuckerberg has already given them money and voiced his support of the program.

less than 1 percent will be going to the folks that make it all happen. Where is the rest of that dough going?

20. Are you auditioning for the PR department? Well done spin!
Over 2 years, 600 K out of $100mn (not even a fraction of a usual PR fund) will supposedly go to teachers who are chosen as having "innovative" programs. (Just call them "Superman," right?) That's what you wrote as though we should genuflect. Further critique is superfluous, your own data will do.
