Who is this guy? NYPD Supervisor Mace and Run.
Edited on Sun Sep-25-11 11:14 AM by Blue State Bandit

This NYPD Supervisor maced a crowd of female protesters at #OccupyWallStreet yesterday. As seen in the http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=618958&mesg_id=618958">video posted earlier many of the beat cops were caught off guard as well. One actually got a face full for his troubles. The video clearly shows him casually walking up to the orange mesh as another supervisor approaches yelling. He was unprovoked, gave no warning, not even to the officers holding the mesh. The actions of the officers (the shocked look on many of there faces and the one rubbing his face), and the actions of the supervisors (all leaving the scene after this attack) tells me all I need to know.

I believe this is a blatant attempt to foment a split between the protesters and the beat cops; an attempt to create tensions between the police and the people so that violence will ensue. Don't let that happen.

I'm posting this because I see a lot of comments that disparage the NYPD as a whole for this action. I believe this is detrimental to the cause.

Many of the cops doing crowd control are doing just that. Many understand why these protests are going on. And I believe that many of them don't feel too good about what they are being forced to do.

This "man" (term used loosely) and the other supervisors seen scurrying away afterwards make the average beat cop NYPD look bad. These are not the "Blue Collar/Shirt officers that are "just doing their jobs". These are the sycophants that are giving the orders and leaving the beat cops holding the bag.

Don't turn on the cops. get the cops to turn on them.

Props to "WhoIsNumberNone" for the screen grab.

7. The police are doing
crowd control? Controlling a few young women with mesh fencing? Why did they choose young women to corral? Maybe they should go pick on someone their own size?

These cops fencing in these women are pathetic. I have never seen this fencing tactic until now. I guess if the women could see, they could have crawled under the fencing...but of course they were maced.

What was the point of fencing them? To arrest them? Or just to mace them? Why were they fenced?

I can't tell from the picture in the article, but the name "Bologna" and his being commanding officer of the precinct which covers Lower Manhattan both seem to match.

http://www.thevillager.com/villager_113/afteryearsoftrouble.html

July 5, 2005

In his 23 years with the New York Police Department, Captain Anthony Bologna, the new commanding officer of the First Precinct, which covers Lower Manhattan, Soho, Hudson Sq. and the South Village, has been all over Manhattan and much of Brooklyn.

He’s been a SNEU (Street Narcotices Enforcement Unit) cop busting drug pushers, served in Manhattan South in an anti-drunk-driving squad and worked in the Brooklyn South Task Force in the early 1990s during the Crown Heights riot. He investigated police officers involved with drug dealers in the Internal Affairs Unit, served in the Organized Crime Control Bureau, led a detective squad in Washington Heights that closed a dozen murder cases one year and served as commanding officer of the Manhattan South Task Force just before assuming command of the First Precinct at the end of last month. . . .

Promoted to lieutenant in 1996, he went back to the Lower East Side’s Seventh Precinct but a year later he became a detective and was appointed head of the detectives squad in the 30th Precinct in Washington Heights, where there were 18 homicides in 1997, all but four or five of which were solved, and 12 homicides in 1998, which were all solved, Bologna recalled.

But his career path changed again when he passed the exam for captain and won the promotion in October 1998 that sent him back to Manhattan South Borough Command. He became acting commanding officer in February 2000 of the Manhattan South Task Force, the unit that responds to special situations like demonstrations and received the full appointment in May the following year.

(On edit -- add this)

http://www.dnainfo.com/20100504/manhattan/commanding-officer-leaves-first-precinct-after-five-years-of-service

May 4, 2010

After leading Lower Manhattan’s police precinct for five years, Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna will start a new job this week at Patrol Borough Manhattan South.

“Change is always interesting,” Bologna told DNAinfo Tuesday morning in between packing boxes at his office in the first precinct. “You do what they give you and you do your best. I’m looking forward to new challenges.” . . .

Bologna’s new job as a borough executive in Manhattan South does not automatically mean a promotion in rank, but it could lead to one, Bologna said.

20. Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!!!
His badge says Inspector, watching the video it seems to me that ONLY BIG BRASS would/could do what I believe we all saw him do. A normal(?) Lt or Captain to me would not have that much of an ego. The higher the rank the more bigger the ego, especially in the NYPD.

In a perfect world, I would like to see him walking that proverbial beat in Staten Island or in a surreal world the Bernie Kerik perp walk!!!

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/09/chelsea_elliott.php

=================

"Chelsea Elliott, Occupy Wall Street Protester Sprayed by Cop, Tells Us What Happened"

We were penned off on the sidewalk, and I couldn't really see, but I've seen video since, and there was a kid being beat up in the street (video at the link).

I heard screams near me, and this young girl near me was shoved down -- their hands were on her head until she reached the pavement (she was yelling because the cops were beating up some 19-year-old kid). I screamed something like, "Stop! Why are you doing this?" There was blood and shit; it was terrifying.

...Then this cop in a white collared shirt came around and just sprayed us, not even one steady stream, more like you were spraying a plant -- me and three or four other girls. I fell to the ground, and the girl behind me, this pretty, thin girl, a total hippie, with short hair and a gray tank top, they got her so bad! We were just lying on the ground, it was extremely painful. The cop I was talking to, he talked to the cop who sprayed us, and was like, "Thanks for the warning." I think he got maced in the eye, too.

...It was incredibly painful. The pain in my face went away after about an hour; my ears felt like the worst sunburn of my life. It feels like pouring a bottle of Tabasco all over your eyes and face, and I have a really high pain tolerance.

I will put this on Facebook when I get home, with commentary that the boss cops sprayed, even hitting the police officer on the right, then sauntered away. He did an indiscriminate spraying of everyone.

Hate to have it happen this way, but this will change opinions and turn the tide toward the people, against the corporate masters and the powerful cops. Not the regular cops, the bosses of them.

54. Seargent Pepper-Spray !?
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 01:34 PM by KurtNYC
edit to add:

Looks like they are corralling them specifically SO they can spray them before arresting them. Probably only white shirts can spray so the blue guys pen and then the white shirts come over and spray. At about 36 secs the cop in the foreground (who seems to have just told the woman in front of him that she is being arrested based on her reaction) leans back. He knows whats coming. The cops at screen right tilts his head down and closes his eyes. The decision to spray was made before the white shirt comes over.

56. The police spokesman is claiming the Sergeant used the spray "appropriately" b/c the protesters
were getting in the way of the officers deploying the barricade. How does blinding and dropping four people to their knees in the street help get that barricade deployed? They are now imobilized, others run to their aid and the whole situation becomes even MORE of an obstacle, doesn't it? Note that none of the blue shirt officers make any move to further deploy the barrier once the women "in the way" are downed.

Dear NYPD spokesman, you are REALLY bad at your job. You took a bad situation and made it worse.

I think Sergeant Pepper Spray AND the spokesman may be out of a job soon.

"I still haven't washed off the splattered milk from my shoes. We had to use milk to wash the pepper spray out the woman's eyes. I still hear screaming in pain, sobbing and saying how much it hurt as we held her head. The last time I saw her, we were fleeing from the police who were arresting everyone on 12th street. She escaped into a movie theater with the help of others because she still couldn't open her eyes over 15 minutes later. After witnessing how much pain she was in I will never forget what this man did on a physical and emotional level to many people on Saturday. He created a war zone. I don't want to think that all of the NYPD is like this because I also met some very fine members of our cities police force on Saturday. People who cared about people and the protesters."

First we'll get the "OMFG dangerous job cut them some slack!" people. Then when no one buys that garbage we'll get the "The protesters started it!" brigade. When it's obvious no one is buying that either, because we can just watch the video, then they'll switch to the bad apple defense.

Most of them have families who are also affected by the legal thievery. It does seem the 'whiteshirts' are the ones who are instigating the violence.

Wonder how the whiteshirts drew this assignment...., were they handpicked for this detail or did they volunteer.
