The latest New York City protest is OccupyWallStreet. Even though its turnout last week fell well short of hopes (the estimates from the group were that 2000 participated; the New York Times suggests numbers more like “hundreds” but the photos from the 17th make figures larger figures seem plausible), making it a nuisance level demonstration rather than a major statement, the powers that be seem to be trying a bit too hard to prevent it from getting traction.

The organizers were using Twitter to promote participation and visibility. And so Twitter intervened. From AmpedStatus:

On at least two occasions, Saturday September 17th and again on Thursday night, Twitter blocked #OccupyWallStreet from being featured as a top trending topic on their homepage. On both occasions, #OccupyWallStreet tweets were coming in more frequently than other top trending topics that they were featuring on their homepage.

I guess it's no different than having a "dungeon" for issues such as I/P. After all, freedom of speech doesn't mean other people should have to be subjected to it.

13. It wasn't just Twitter. Yahoo was also blocking emails

that mentioned Occupywallstreet and have admitted it. It's not just the 3-4 days, it was the timing. This was the beginning of the occupation and those days were critical to getting it started.

The media blackout, combined with this kind of censorship had an effect. Fortunately though, it won't matter in the long run, and in a way only made people aware of what they need to do to get around this kind of tactic.

What, did they say the government asked them to do it as part of some Patriot Act thing?

This country is getting worse and worse on the road to actual fascism.

Did you know DC passed a law allowing summary arrests and prosecution at the sole discretion
of the police officer, if a resident accuses anyone in a public OR private building of
disturbing the peace?

This just happened and I wouldn't be surprised if they use it in October 6.

20. Yahoo issued a statement after several people complained

that their emails containing 'occupywallstreet' were being blocked. A few independent media people video-taped a test showing that it was happening. After that Yahoo issued a statement claiming it was an error and they would fix it. But for those sending out emails before the protests began, it was already too late.

Twitter, to my knowledge, has not acknowledged blocking the hashtag from trending.

When he voted for FISA in 2008.

They probably meant to merely spy on the e-mails, not accidentally delete them.

We know this to be true since Obama demonized the MAN WHO LEAKED THE TRUTH about the national listening program to Harper's and the New York Times that got the ball rolling on Bush's Warrantless Wiretapping in the FIRST PLACE.

I.e. he SIGNED OFF on the bill decriminalizing telecoms for participating in the data feed of all phone and e-mail, and then set about CRIMINALIZING the whistleblower who first made people aware of the program that was already an open secret in the Washington area, since it employs like 50,000 people.
