I have a question...About the "DU Ignore Tool"
I have never used the "DU Ignore Tool" & I doubt that I ever would but I was just curious how it works...

If I put someone on ignore does it just make all their post invisible to me?

If I put someone on ignore does it send them a message telling them I did or the other way around if someone put me on ignore would I know it?

Is there a way to know if you have upset someone so much they put you on ignore? LOL?

Anyway, I was just curious & thought I would ask. THANKS!!

1. When you put someone on Ignore announce it
That's the only way they'll know.

13. LOL Some posters for some reason seem to make a daily/weekly announcement
that they are putting posters on ignore "AT LONG LAST!!!" as if anyone gives a shit, including the poster they're putting on ignore.

It's hilarious in its absurdly stupid melodrama.

36. Yes, for the longest time I would reply to those people who continually announce...
...I am on ignore. I prefer being ignored. By all means, ignore me. I want reverse ignore so I can force people to ignore me who aren't particularly civilized. The truth is that as I walk down the street I can hear others' conversations perfectly well, whether they want me to or not. I can withhold my opinion from them, however, though I have an opinion.

Usually in caps.

I thought the revised rules forbade that along with gravedancing (too bad about that one, it made vadawg's departure all the sweeter). Hmm.

Edited on Sat Sep-24-11 06:06 PM by quinnox
And also, their posts just show up as "ignored", so if you are curious, you can re-log into DU as a guest and see their post and who it is and what they said that you had on ignore.

Edit: One other important thing, anyone you ignore you will not see any threads that they make, and you are not given any notice like you are in threads that they respond in with "ignore". Any threads people make that you are ignoring just will not appear on the forum page to you.

25. different reasons
maybe its someone who you forgot you had on ignore, and then you want to take them off ignore to give them another chance.

Another reason could be the ignored person started a long sub-thread, and you want to see what they said that set off the activity.

Its an option that is there, its not as if you are going to look at the ignored posts all the time, only if you are curious for whatever reason. In my case, usually I don't check it out.

I got tired of arguing with hacks, so now I use it quite liberally. I don't mind debating with people, but when the other person is just out to start a fight, I don't need that.

I do tell them, incidentally. The last thing I say to them is this: "Welcome to my ignore list."

11. what a lot of folderol! My goodness, can't people take a little criticism now and then?
Maybe it's because I'm too damn old to care what people think, but jeez, folks, if you have something to say, just let 'er rip and if someone responds, well, read it or not read it and move on...no one ORDERS anyone to read anything. All this maneuvering around to avoid someone's opinion is kinda lame, if I may be so bold to say. Who cares? Man up! Woman up!

15. I feel the same. I always find it funny that most people seem to use ignore
when they simply don't want to hear a varying opinion.

Now, there are some cases when someone is stalking and then I think ignore is applicable (as is a note to the admins) but I've seen people scream they were putting people on ignore because someone asked for further clarification or simply disagreed with an OP or a post. So "off to ignore" they go!

And my personal opinion is that anyone who feels the need to announce that they are putting people on ignore is too ridiculous for words. Those kind of posts crack me up.

26. You're right. It is easy
Stalking/harassment is just about the only reason I could ever see putting someone on ignore.

Come to think of it, I've had to ask a few confused souls here to put me on ignore. I was perfectly able to ignore their posts but the second my name showed up in a thread, BAM! There they were. And the only people I've ever requested this from are ones I've never seen say anything intelligent, relevant or honest. Disagreement is one thing, blatantly lying or using the most absurdly biased sources is another.

44. With some people you can't get anywhere by asking them to put YOU on ignore.
I tried that with a tiny group on one of DU's most "ferocious" forums (I'll let you guess which one!). I got tired of their tantrums and strange, illogical "charts" that "proved" their point (absurd is the right word all right). I didn't want the clutter. Well, when I asked them to put me on Ignore I only encouraged them further!

My best advice: just disengage. Leave the thread entirely or ignore what they post to you and answer others on the thread (so they know they are pointedly being left out). It's stupid and childish, I know, and it's tiring dealing with it. But those are my strategies.

Stalking/harassment is a different animal. That must be reported, IMO. If someone is doing that, then it should be treated seriously. If you report it calmly with backup evidence, I am certain that the Admins will have a look at your complaint and that reason and facts will win the day.

but with most annoying stuff, I just wait it out and, interestingly, I find that more times than not those folks wind up tombstoned.

It only sticks out in my mind because it was so silly and petty.

42. The only reason I ever use it
on my own volition is when someone has verbally abused me.

The other reason I use it is when someone else announces s/he has put me on ignore. I do the same back just so I won't waste time and trouble replying to that person when s/he will never see it.

It is pretty amusing, though, to be the target of an announcement of being ignored merely for the "crime" of having a different opinion on something. Seems a little stupid to me. I think I've disagreed with nearly everyone I have regular contact with here on one occasion or another. Then the next day I'll agree with them on something else.

We can't agree with everyone 100% of the time. How completely boring would that be...

12. there is sort of one way to tell if you are on ignore
If you try to PM somebody who is ignoring you, you will get a message saying "this member does not wish to receive PMs."

However, there may be a twist to that, because when I ignore people, I still allow them to send me PMs. Who knows, maybe they will notice that I never reply to any of their replies, suspect I have them on ignore and send me a PM telling me what an a$$-weasel I am for ignoring them. Then I will realize what a perceptive person they are and we will begin a torrid affair that suddenly ends with a drunken trip to Antigua, leaving me penniless and bitter. In other words, just the same.

Well, it could happen.

who constantly posts "satire" threads without indicating that's what they are in the title. (I've as active a sense of humor as anyone, but it gets a bit tired after a while if you're short of time and just want to read some breaking news or whatever.)

Unfortunately, it doesn't stop the post titles showing up in the home page listings, so the first indication I get is if I click through and the forum ware doesn't display the post but tells me that I have that poster on ignore.

58. sort of, no, and yes.
You'll see that someone on your ignore list has posted, but not the contents of the post or the name of the poster.

No message is sent when you place someone on ignore, though you may choose to do so if you desire.

It IS possible to see who has you on ignore, however only if you are a mod and can look at your own profile with admin access. Otherwise no.

As a side note, don't be too afraid to use the ignore function, I've placed about 3 or 4 people on the list. If those people are banned/tombstoned/nuked then they will actually be removed from your ban list. My current block list is empty because of that feature. So if they really do deserve to be on your block list, chances are they'll be banned at some point down the line anyways, so you might as well save yourself the immediate aggravation.
