Rick Perry strikes me as a boor
Every time I see him I think he has a brute inside that can't quite hide. His hair is perfect and his suits and clothes are obviously perfectly tailored, but there's something ugly about him that shows. He strikes me as believing he's the envy of all men and the desire of all women. He acts as if no matter what he does or says he outshines everyone else in the room. The brute in him shows a lot as conceit. He turns on the charm without realizing what charm is. He gets too close to people when he talks to them and he's pushy about invading private space. It's something he does deliberately like Lyndon Johnson did. Physically overpowering other men. He pokes his finger at people when he's not happy with them and he grabs them like he did with Ron Paul. I don't like Ron Paul or any of the Republicans, but the physical intimidation of a Senior citizen is really crude and shows boorish bad manners. I doubt he would do that to someone who could push back. He shows the demeanor of a bully.

Sorry. But I had to get that out there. He makes my skin crawl.

1. I think you've nailed it, but then these traits are awefully common among politicians, aren't they?
Arrogance, meanness, the air of superiority and entitledment.

These almost seem to be prerequisites.

Nice guys get nowhere.

2. He reminds me of Clinton...
I do not think he is as smart as Clinton, but he appears to be just as smooth and crafty.

16. Clinton is known as "Slick Willy"...
He indeed has that smoothness and craftiness of a career politician and it is quite prominent. It certainly has not gone unnoticed by me and others, yourself included, and he rightly deserves the moniker.

Nevertheless, I have always felt I could trust Clinton in the sense that his heart does seem to be for the most part with "the people", from the standpoint of his basic nature and moral compass. He grew up with many downtrodden folk and they were his friends. Clinton has always been, of course, greatly led and swayed by his political instincts and his policy decisions erred on the side of the moneyed and powerful a few too many times; however, I would need to be sharply redirected and disabused of my strong intuitions at this point not to believe that he is fundamentally a good and well-meaning human being.

Perry, on the other hand, not so much! In fact I don't think there is an ounce of human kindness flowing in that man's veins. It is told, you know, that even his Aggie frat brothers couldn't stand him and he was often the butt of their pranks, abuses, and ridicule (well deserved, I am sure).

I just wanted to make a statement on Clinton's behalf here because the only distinguishing factor you name between the two men appears to be "intelligence". I think the difference is much, much greater.

PEACE!!!:hippie:

28. "I think the difference is much, much greater."
I agree; however, my comment merely an observation of their campaigning styles and mannerisms. Perry, like Clinton, uses stories of real-life people to illustrate the need for new policies or the success of policies he enacted.

He also invokes emotion. Perry tries to show he has true empathy for the people he is talking about. He shows emotion, and this appears to allow him to connect with people and attract their interest.

He may also be smarter than I originally thought. In the most recent debate, Perry demonstrated that his immigration policy is different than GOP rivals. I believe is making a strategic move. He knows that incumbent presidents are hard to beat and that his success hinges on his ability to garner the votes and support of something other than the R base.

Perry won 40% of the Hispanic vote in his most recent gubernatorial contest. If Rs nominate him and wins 40% of the Hispanic vote in the presidential race, he will beat Obama handily.

3. It's the swagger
without the smirk. The smirk actually made Shrub look pathetic, rather than purely arrogant.

However, I'm convinced, the damage has been done. When Perry called the Rethug crowd heartless over his stance on in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, he just reminded the GOP what it really didn't like about Bush the younger.

He's a deliberate asshole like Cheney is. He's supremely convince he can look down on everyone and anyone without bothering to hide it. And a conceited pushy prick.

11. He tries and fails to look polished because of that brutishness
That's what I mean about being boorish. It's one thing to be a teabagger who doesn't even try to hide their inner loathing of all things refined, and another to think he's fooled everyone into thinking he's refined. He's not. Refined or fooling anyone.

15. He is similar in so many ways...
to W...

The way he sounds. The way he expresses himself. His facial expressions. His arrogance and all the rest of what you wrote. The only thing I don't see is the sneer/smirk, but that may be due to my not being able to look at him very long.

It actually turns my stomach to hear/watch him speak.

Oh, and guys who are too well put together...I usually want to slap them. Manicures. Every single hair in place. No wrinkles in their $3,000 suits. Shoes shined so they reflect a lit match at 20 paces.

bleh.

I like a little bit of scruffy... :7

He strikes me as being quite cavalier about his cruelty. He had those eyes when he said his bit about the death penalty.
