Politico: Chris Christie "Reconsidering" his Refusal to Run in '12
With the party’s frontrunner sagging, Chris Christie is reconsidering pleas from Republican elites and donors to run for president in 2012, two Republican sources told POLITICO.

The New Jersey governor has indicated he is listening to big-money backers and Republican influence-makers, and will let them know in roughly a week whether he has moved off his threat-of-suicide vow to stay on the sidelines of a presidential race that remains amorphous heading into the fall, the two sources said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s candidacy has failed to clear a basic bar with elites and some donors, and his shoddy debate performance in Orlando has only highlighted the window for someone who Republicans searching for a Mitt Romney alternative can rally around.

Christie’s potential candidacy has been an increasingly fevered fantasy of a certain cadre of some media and business elites — mostly based in New York, with a smattering of California technology and entertainment players — since last summer. That’s when he showed up at a Sun Valley conference hosted by the investment banker Allen and Co. and wowed the crowd, including Rupert Murdoch, with what many in attendance described as a nimble mind and a speaking style that was both articulate and blunt-spoken.

Rick Perry is sagging? HA! If you want sagging, my friends, the New Jersey Governor is your man!

Seriously, though, it now seems possible the Fat Man will join the Little Boys in their quest to nuke this country. :(

1. Run?
The MSM will have to find a new verb to describe seeking the Presidency. This guy can barely walk, let alone "run."

2. I'm not one to hand out compliments to my governor
but I actually think he might be too smart to run this time around.

17. He is
He knows that he has not been re-elected to a major office, and that is a requirement to be taken seriously in the Repig party. Also, he's smart enough to know that Mitt's got the best chance of anyone out there to get the Republicon nomination, and that the fundies will vote third party for a snake-handler in the general election, rather than hand another talking point to the Mormon missionaries poaching their flocks.

He knows that the Rethugs are toast, but the public stands a reasonable chance of being tired of the Obama administration and everything in it by 2016, unless for some reason, they can pull it all together. If so, the Democratic Party might be able to squeeze out one more win (think the Reagan-Bush disaster of 1980-1992) and will be ready for a Repuke by 2020. Christie will only be 58 then, and if he hasn't croaked, he can sell the "well, they said Dick Cheney was going to die of a heart attack in 2000, didn't they?" line as a way to look past his possible health problems.

If he can wait until 2016 or 2020 for a real try, he knows he'll have advantages he just doesn't have right now, especially given the lateness of the start. He'll have four to eight years as a spokesman for the reich wing criticizing the Democratic Party, and that wlll endear him even further to the trogolodytes.

Besides, if he were offered the VP spot, he'd take it, and would vault him into front runner status for the next time.

10. If he does ever decide to run, we'll know well in advance
He'll probably have weight-loss surgery and get healthy-looking ( a la Huckleberry).

His health would be a real issue for many people...if he remains seriously overweight. He's already had a recent "scare".

People like to think that their candidate can withstand the rigors of a campaign/presidency.

They may love his bombastic-bully persona, but when push comes to shove, I don't think he could win.

If he's ever going to run, I see it when there's an open field in '16.. That gives him plenty of time to get ready.

8. The Republicans know they are in serious trouble and will try
anything to get some kind of candidate to run that might be able to get ANY kind of broad backing.

One of the problems is that there isn't any defining and solid base to the Republican party anymore. The Tea Partiers have caused a serious split, the more moderate Republicans have no sane voice and because the media embraces conflict and drama, only the really wacko candidates are getting the most airtime. And even then, only for fifteen minutes.

Christie is too flamboyant and uncontrolable. He's already made some serious mistakes that won't bring their party together. And while they scramble, as angry as the liberals are at the state of things, they will come together much faster and more seriously to back Obama to keep the wackos out of the White House. Not every voting citizen hangs on every word from Politico or Huffington or ANOTHER debate or bloggers.

The whole damn process of campaigning is too damned long anyway. The elections have become more imporatnat than the actual governing.

14. Chris Christie is different than the other Republicans...
Edited on Sat Sep-24-11 04:10 PM by matmar
He cut aid to municipalities, he capped property tax raises at 2% per year, he cut the public works tunnel project into Manhattan and turned around and gave public money to a casino in Atlantic City, he gave public funding to a shopping mall in northern NJ, he refuses to raise taxes on the wealthy......hey wait a minute......
