TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Hoping to avoid protests like those that rocked Minneapolis and St. Paul four years ago, law enforcement officials will have thousands of state and local officers on guard during next year's Republican National Convention in Tampa.
State legislators were told Tuesday that at least 4,000 officers from across Florida will be on hand when the convention runs from Aug. 27 through Aug. 30, 2012. Another 1,700 members of the National Guard will also be available.
The hope is to prevent the type of disruptions that occurred during the 2008 Republican National Convention, which included broken windows, assaults and other violence. More than 800 people were arrested in St. Paul and Minneapolis, though most cases were later dismissed.
"The major concern we will face in this event and the community will face is civil disobedience," said Jim Madden, assistant commissioner for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
