The Wall Street Occupation Turns One Week Old Amid Arrests and Solidarity
Skies were cloudy on the seventh morning of #OccupyWallStreet, an anti-corporate rally and protest-city in Zuccotti Park at the intersection of Broadway and Liberty Street in New York City’s Financial District. As the movement nears a week in age, it has been reinvigorated by a night of marches, arrests and growing solidarity.
Last night, during their daily march on Wall Street, #OccupyWallStreet protesters were joined by participants from an earlier rally at Union Square in memory of Troy Davis, with hundreds pouring down Broadway to join the the #OccupyWallStreet march downtown.

With numerous diplomats in town, NYPD security reached numbers previously unseen since #OccupyWallStreet began. Paddy wagons, police in riot gear and a new barricade network around several blocks in the Wall Street area were reported by sources on the scene.

Just after 8 p.m. the two groups met, now numbering around 1,000. Within minutes they were chanting “We are all Troy Davis,” as the growing police force tried to fracture the rally. About a quarter of the gathered protesters marched on as the rest headed to Zuccotti Park, which has been renamed Liberty Plaza as of Sept 17. Six people at the rally were detained by police from the 1st Precinct, where a solidarity group arrived within 30 minutes to chant “Let them go!”

No comment, not worth it.

2. I'll volunteer to comment.
These people are heroically putting their bodies on the line. Their name is their message for right now. And that is the right message for our time, because this is a time for a counter-attack in the war of the classes.

So if you don't support them, or think that everything is hunky dory or think they should get "decent haircuts," or get a job or some other incredibly clever and snarky comment of that ilk-- just keep your idea to yourself and move along. I really don't give a shit how clever your snark is. We want to engage with people who realize how dire our situation is and are willing to consider actually doing something about it.

So to those of you who have been polluting these threads with irrelevance while Rome burns, you can kiss my leftist Irish ass. Strong message to follow.

5. Nadin, sorry if the previous post was over the top.
It's your OP, so I hope I didn't overreach. I'm just tired of suffering fools gladly.

3. Keep up the good work. I wish I could be there or do something.
Oh, and DU so needs a "raised fist" smiley for these kind of threads.

9. A Ken Kesey sort of thing to do would be to send out a press release
under a Tea Party banner and then have a Viet Nam vet pretend to be from the Tea Party, take a bullhorn and give a populist rant about Wall Street bankers. Journalists and camera people would come like bees to honey. If done properly it might even pierce the corporate blackout.

11. That's probably what it would take. Not a bad idea, either.

This seems appropriate: WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE, BUT YOUR CHAINS!

13. I hope this movement will spread to the business centers of other cities across the nation. I've
just written a post on the reason for it.

14. Thank you, Nadinbrzinsky
That is a very good article. The meeting of the two groups on the night Troy Davis was executed was very moving. People had been criticizing the Wall St. protesters for their support of Troy Davis earlier calling it a 'distraction'. There are always nay-sayers.

15. The police have given the occupiers an eviction notice.
The Park is a private park, so the city cannot evict them, unless the owner has asked them to.
