I had excellent visibility from just below the Big Dipper across the sky above me. And it is a very dark night. The drift smoke was no factor, but the 30-35 knot wind was (for photography). The lookout was swaying too badly for night shots. The drift smoke is just about on me, so if the satellite makes another lap I probably couldn't see it.

4. Falling Satellite Slows Down, Earth Strike Delayed ...NPR

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A 6-ton NASA satellite on a collision course with Earth clung to space Friday, apparently flipping position in its ever-lower orbit and stalling its death plunge.

The old research spacecraft was targeted to crash through the atmosphere sometime Friday night or early Saturday, putting the U.S. back in the potential crosshairs, although most of the satellite should burn up during re-entry.

"It just doesn't want to come down," said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

McDowell said the satellite's delayed demise demonstrates how unreliable predictions can be. That said, "the best guess is that it will still splash in the ocean, just because there's more ocean out there."

Any pilots, flight crew members or aircraft passengers who manage to observe the UARS satellite re-entry could get a spectacular view. Because the satellite is so large, its fiery re-entry should be visible as a bright fireball, even in daylight. If the satellite falls over the Earth's night side, the resulting light show could be spectacular, NASA officials have said.

On the other hand this report suggests they aren't sure where it landed
NASA's dead six-ton satellite fell to Earth early on Saturday morning, starting its fiery death plunge somewhere over the vast Pacific Ocean. Details were still sketchy, but the US Air Force's Joint Space Operations Center and NASA say that the bus-sized satellite first penetrated Earth's
atmosphere somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. That doesn't necessarily mean it all fell into the sea. NASA's calculations had predicted that the former climate research satellite would fall over a 500-mile swath.

The two government agencies say the 35-foot satellite fell sometime between 11:23 pm EDT and 1:09 am EDT. NASA said it didn't know the precise time or location yet.
