Just Another Day

Troy Davis was executed last night and the burst of nominal news media coverage of the last-minute appeal has concluded, we can go back to our normal business. Most of the world woke this morning, shocked at thus gross miscarriage of justice.

But not here.

After all, we now have a greater percentage of incarcerated persons in the US than any other nation on the planet. We are 4% of the world population but account for 25% of all prisoners. Not exactly a #1 status to brag about.

Speaking of bragging rights, the hunger rate in America is also at an all time high, with a record number of families receiving food stamps and claiming on a recent study that they frequently went hungry. Imagine what we could be as a nation if we spent as much on education and social services as we did on prisons and waging wars?

We’ll also look at Congress’ seeming inability to fund the government, the impasse over the formation of a Palestinian State, and the ever-entertaining GOP presidential campaign.

I'm thrilled about my iMAC... thanks!

We've been caught up in FAFSA hell (it's a form that has to be submitted prior to a student entering freshman yr. and completed every year after). We were first flagged when Lucas turned 17 and we lost a child tax credit. The error read very close to 'with no substantial increase in income the tax amount is too high'. My thought was, "go after those who don't pay their taxes".

Charlie was caught up in the FAFSA audit process this year, even though he doesn't qualify for federal aid, nor anything besides the HOPE scholarship. He wasn't notified, nor were we, that he was flagged for the FAFSA audit. As of Aug. 11th, the financial aid office at MTSU had received 5 copies of our tax returns, W2's, 1099's, and other documents, and although nothing about us has changed except that the savings account has gone down as we've paid his tuition....his audit/verification wasn't processed in time for this semester.

We're paying rent and utilities for the apartment that he and his roomies from last year found and during the summer. The cavalier attitudes of the financial aid director is appalling and I will be writing letters to the Dean of Students and the Provost. :hug:

I hope that all is well with you! :hi: :hug: My life is strange at the moment, Charlie was caught up in FAFSA hell, the financial aid dept. (he isn't eligible for aid) dropped the ball and he couldn't register for the fall semester classes that he registered for in April.

Long story, he doesn't know what to do with himself right now, and I don't know what to do with him except try to engage him him when I can. I'll be writing some letters to the Dean of Students and the Provost

over 3 weeks ago even with a surge protector, the power went off for about 5 mins. and my iMAC was fried, and my XM radio wouldn't work anymore.

I'm a glutton for punishment, the teenaged male who was here last night (washing his clothes from school, boiling a toothbrush for him to use, feeding him, etc.) is here again tonight.

We're in the process of my making biscuits, the mr. is frying sausage that we will put together for tomorrow morning.

24. About a week ago my iMac just froze

Tried to boot dozens of times & finally got The Gray Screen of Death, advising me to power down and up again.

Went to Apple support and found this is called "kernel panic" and is supposedly generated by something via the internet. I don't know whether this is Apple's way of avoiding the "virus" word, but they recommend trying to reboot from the installation discs, which I can't do because there's a disc in the slot already and no way to manually eject it.

Waiting for Mr. pig to take a day off so we can take it to the hospital.

Gah. I needed that 27" monitor. Still can't see out of surgical eye.
