TX ends "last meal" for death row inmates
Edited on Thu Sep-22-11 06:35 PM by rainbow4321
Looks like within hours of getting a complaint letter from a TX state Senator, they ended it. The inmate who was executed last night ordered but didn't eat the food he ordered, the repuke sent a letter this morning, and, poof, the prison system has stopped the practice.

http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/09/whitmire-on-last-meal-for-deat.html

(snip)

The letter focused specifically on death row inmate Lawrence Brewer, a white supremacist who was executed by lethal injection Wednesday night. The Houston Chronicle reported that the Brewer ordered--but did not eat-- a triple meat bacon cheeseburger, a cheese omelet, two chicken fried steaks, a large bowl of fried okra, three fajitas, a pound of barbecue with a half loaf of white bread and a pint of Blue Bell ice cream, which Whitmire called "ridiculous."

(snip)

on edit: apparently he is a Dem, not a repuke. Geez..and he is one of the Dems who fled the state a while back in protest of re-districting (the ones who Delay threatened with arrest, etc..)

2. Enough fat in that meal to have killed him with a massive coronary...

That said, I have just had it with the need for RETHUGS to be ever more abusive and punitive. The guy was going to die. As despicable as the convicted was, how is this anything but just the ultimate nasty level of pettiness?

5. Grandstanding...it's not about the waste.
"It is extremely inappropriate to give someone sentenced to death such a privilege..." It's about revenge.

6. A lot of other states have ended the practice
Some of them have a set price for the ingredients for the meal, others require the inmate to order off the prison menu...and, of course, many states have solved the problem altogether by the simple expedient of not executing people.

But the repuke has a point--I'm pretty sure James Byrd Jr. didn't get to have a triple meat bacon cheeseburger, two chicken fried steaks and three fajitas before he was chained to the back bumper of Lawrence Brewer's pickup and beheaded against a culvert.

8. Great point
Now that we've had enough, and we're good and sick of Mr. Brewer, let's get down to it and show that we're no better than the worst murderer. Makes me feel safer/juster/civilizeder just thinking about it! God bless Texas and the other, lesser, United States of under God America!

13. Repuke would have been my first assumption
as well. Just seems like who would be the first to jump on it to grab headlines or politically placate the hard liners.

Here's his voting/issues record for those a little more curious about him like me.

14. $50 maybe $75 tops?
Probably cost less than the wine the lobbyist bought the good Senator at his last meal.

I would like most of that stuff knowing that the cholesterol wouldn't have time to kill me, but given the circumstances, I doubt I would have much of an appetite.

Just stop the barbaric practice of executions, problem solved.
