Davis's execution is not playing well with middle-America, even among those who are normally rather pro-capital-punishment. It shook a lot of people who thought there's no way they can execute a man if there is even a 1/2% chance he's innocent. Well, they did...and it's unnerving a lot of people, even ones who normally have no issue with the death penalty and still don't. I can talk about all the Facebook conversations I've had, but I want to focus down on a small segment of them as particularly exemplary.

I have the circumstance to have grown-up one town over from the site of the Petit home invasion murders in CT & the trial of the "mastermind" Josh Komisarjevsky is going on now; that was my community. I can honestly say that at-least half the people I knew growing-up knew at-least one of the victims. Dr. Petit was my mother's endocrinologist. They played in our parks, we shopped in the same grocery stores, attended the same schools. It hit close to home. The community is very invested in the case, I've been kind of getting the arm's length treatment for weeks (even from my own family!) because I'm an anti-DP activist. This morning everybody wanted to talk about it and about Davis...tell me what a difference there is between Komisarjevsky & Hayes (who most of them want to see publicly torn limb-from-limb) and Troy Davis...they're not trying to convince me, they're trying to convince themselves, you can see it in the conversations. Their confidence in the system and the punishment is shaken, even if they don't change their POV, they're going to have to work through the sense that an innocent man may have died last night because the system is imperfect.

Applauding that and having that applause replayed on national TV just might be the most-damaging thing politically since the "Daisy" ad. Those candidates are going to come off like monsters, those tea-partiers will come off as people that Americans just don't want to be. Visceral repulsion is a strong force.
