It seems to be making it's way around the tubes today - I goggled Troy Davis/Samuel Crowe, and it is all over, and I don't know where it originated.

Something interesting here is the "off duty" aspect of the cop whose death Troy Davis was executed for: How, exactly, do you know an off-duty police officer is a police officer? At least in dystopic sci-fi they tattoo the cops (see Judge Dredd) so you know who they are all the time...

He was on death row for shooting a policeman while the actual killer was the key person to identify him.

There appears to be such a thirst for retribution when a police officer is killed that the actual person punished for the crime doesn't seem to matter.

The police officer was actually murdered by a sociopathic juvenile named David Harris, who fingered Randall Adams for the crime but eventually wound up on death row himself. Adams was exonerated in 1989. Harris was executed in Texas in 2004.
