COUNCIL BLUFFS — A Council Bluffs man arrested on multiple offenses after throwing a cat out a seventh-floor window has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Gerardo Martinez, 30, was arrested on suspicion of bestiality, cruelty to animals and indecent exposure in August after witnesses reported seeing a naked man throw a cat out of a seventh-story window at 405 W. Broadway.

While investigators talked with Martinez about the incident, he admitted "to performing a sex act" on the cat and that he had recently used methamphetamine.

Court documents indicated Martinez pleaded guilty last week to cruelty to animals. The bestiality charge was dropped. Prosecutors did not file indecent exposure charges in the case.

7. morbid sidebar, but the physics of falling cats is fascinating.

they fold their bodies in half so they can rotate without violating conservation of angular momentum until their feet are down, then they unfold.

they also splay their feet and toes and puff up their fur, all of which slows their descent. in fact their terminal velocity is rather lower than it otherwise would be, though at such speeds they're still not likely to survive.

one irony is that these tricks take time, during which they fall like most any other object. so there is a range of heights, falls from which are likely to cause damage because they don't have enough time to fully effect all this (as when a parachute is opened too close to the ground), whereas falls from higher up they may easily shake off. up to a point, anyway.
