There is only one response this party can make to Troy Davis' murder that would honor his life
Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 11:15 PM by Ken Burch
And that is to make ABOLITION of the death penalty a platform and policy commitment.

What happened tonight is proof that the death penalty can never be morally acceptable again-and nothing any of our candidates ever did in office after getting elected on a pro-execution platform was ever worth the fact that they took power by pledging to kill people.

It has to stop. We have to MAKE it stop.

Decent societies do not execute people.

I have a Texan next door and will start with him, tomorrow. He will have many others that he can contact, and lets move it!

3. abolition of the death penalty once was a liberal value period
I don't know what has happened to this country.
How I wish the US would join in with the rest of the civilized world.

7. Ending the death penalty is not even on the party platform, let alone
a priority. Maybe the events of the last few days will change that but it will be a long haul.

So were and are the fights against slavery, Jim Crow, sweatshops, poverty, homophobia, the exploitation of workers, unjust wars and the rest of the world's injustices.

10. Excuting the person who didn't kill him didn't do that cop any good.
And it's bullshit to act as if only death penalty supporters care about the victims of violence and their loved ones. Everyone mourns those losses equally.

He's a cretinous scumbag not worth engaging with. He's got an agenda and he's in good company on his opinions with Ann Coulter. She literally parroted the same crap verbatim all afternoon as Zax,

15. I really don't care about honoring Troy Davis.
It would have been fine with me if his sentence had been commuted, but I still think he was guilty and belonged in prison for the rest of his life.

16. Who cares what you think? Our system is based on evidence not speculation by people on the internet.

19. Yes, our system is based on evidence.
Troy Davis was convicted and he appealed his sentence to the highest court for twenty years. That kind of speaks to the evidence.

"Who cares what you think?" Are you still in the sixth grade? I thought the point of these boards was discussion, though I realize that a lot of people discourage thought and only want an echo chamber to reinforce their own views. Your user name would suggest that you might be more open minded.

18. Given the fact that Troy Davis was very possibly guilty
I'm in no rush to "honor his life." As others have said, however, I wouldn't have lost any sleep had the courts decided to vacate his sentence.

20. Bill Clinton interrupted his campaign in the New Hampshire primary in 1992,

in order to fly back to Arkansas to preside over the execution of a death row inmate with an IQ of between 65-75. All to prove Clinton was 'tough on crime.' You could say that Clinton's presidency was established on the foundation of killing someone who barely understood the charges against him. Sorry, but I find that almost as repugnant as anything Reagan or either Bush ever did.

Cue the DP defenders and Clinton defenders. Flame suit on.
