It's doubly tragic that there are people who would actually cheer when hearing how many people a governor had executed.

Does Russ think things suddenly got worse in 1000 (or 1066, to take a familiar date)

I'd be more inclined to say after 100,000 years of human evolution, we can't leave government sponsored execution behind.
