15 Reasons To Oppose The Death Penalty
Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 09:38 PM by Hissyspit
1.) Wrongful Execution of the Innocent.

"Since the DP was reinstated in 1976, 82 inmates have been freed from Death Row. That's 1 Death Row inmate found to be wrongfully convicted for every 7 executed." Also, deters from finding possible real perpetrator of crime.

2.) Executions Cost More Than Life in Prison.

3.) Life in Prison Also Protects Society.

4.) Killing is Morally/Ethically Wrong.

5.) Imperfect Defense - "Many Death Row inmates were convicted while being defended by court-appointed lawyers who are often the worst-paid and most-inexperienced and least-skillful lawyers."

6.) Violates International Human Rights Laws.

7.) No Longer Practiced in Most Countries.

8.) Denial of Basic Right - "According to Humans Right Association capital punishment overrules our most basic human right - the right to life. Human life has fundamental value. The blessedness of human life is denied by the death penalty. Live is precious."

9.) Unfair Judgment - "Generally, it is observed that Capital punishment is inflicted unduly on the poor and minorities. If you follow the data of these victims, you will find that the mentally ill, poor and people belonging to minorities form a large chunk of the total number. You can also notice a kind of racial discrimination this happens due to varied reasons."

10.) Lack of Deterrence

11.) Prolonged Uncertainty – "The validity to the deterrence argument is annulled by the delays, endless appeals, retrials, and technicalities that keep persons predestined to capital punishment waiting for execution for years. In fact, we are not competent enough to carry out execution. This uncertainty and incompetence offers another great injustice. It is itself cruel and a form of torture."

12.) Justifying Circumstances

13.) Family of the Victim is Permanently Traumatized and Victimized.

14.) Celebration of Death

15.) Effects on Society

4. Every time someone here posts a support
of the death penalty (and yes, it has happened) I simply point out that most of the rest of the world gets by quite nicely without it.

Also, if the death penalty is truly a deterrent, then states with the death penalty should, over time, execute fewer and fewer, as the deterrent aspect takes effect. Funny how that's working out.

7. Oh there have been plenty here who think the problem is "Davis was innocent"

And not the fact that we have the death penalty.

Having a death penalty guarantees that innocent people will be executed. Some will never figure that out.

11. Bingo! And as far as I'm concerned, even
if we were totally certain that all who are executed are guilty, capital punishment would still be wrong.

8. #2 Executions cost more than life in prison.
You'd think the 'party of fiscal responsibility' would be all over that one. Instead, they cheer the deaths.

Effing hypocrites.

13. Their answer to that is that there are too many procedural safeguards

So, in their view, it is only expensive because of all of the post conviction review mechanisms.

Get rid of those - ie increae the likelihood of executing innocents - and everything will be fine.

10. I have been anti-death penalty since I first heard of it as a child.

The main reason was selfish: As long as capital punishment is legal, it could happen to me.

Anyone can be falsely convicted--unless you are rich enough, of course.

Some of these self-righteous idiots need to realize that.
