Is there a term for this mathematical observation.


We've seen it when ballots are being counted. When we're trying to determine who is going to win a vote count and it's down to small numbers, we realize the situation is better (or worse depending on who you're supporting), because, for each vote that goes in favor of your candidate, is one less for his opponent. I've seen magicians perform card tricks that exploit this phenomenon and I was wondering if it had a name?

and it looks like a card jumped from one pile to the other.
