Bass Pro Sued By Feds For Discriminating Against Non-White Job Seekers

WASHINGTON -- Bass Pro Shops, one of the leading retailers of outdoor gear, is being sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for allegedly discriminating against African American and Hispanic applicants in several of its stores, according to a suit filed Wednesday in Texas federal court.

Describing the lawsuit as both "major" and "nationwide," the EEOC alleges that the retailer discriminated against minority applicants, retaliated against employees who spoke out about what they considered unfair hiring practices, and destroyed internal records related to hiring. Certain non-white applicants, the agency claims, were not given jobs because they did not fit the Bass Pro brand.

"Bass Pro has been discriminating in its hiring since at least November 2005," the EEOC said in a release.

Minority job seekers, the agency said, were "routinely denied" positions as cashiers, sales associates, team leaders, supervisors and managers at Bass Pro stores. Managers at Bass Pro stores also made "overtly racially derogatory remarks" affirming the practices and noted that African American candidates "did not fit the corporate profile," the EEOC asserts. The alleged discrimination occurred at Bass Pro stores in Texas, Louisiana and Indiana. ..............(more)

1. There are very few minorities there
As a matter of fact, I don't think I have ever seen a minority working there. Even in the bar or the restaurant. I just never thought of it until now. We used to go to the one in Islamorada, the one in Davie and the one in Orlando when we used to have money. Haven't been in there for at least 2 years.

5. I go to Academy Sports and Outdoors...
I don't know their hiring policies, but I have seen Hispanics, Asians and women working there. The company was founded years ago by a Jewish entrepreneur.

I just wish more employers would hire older people. Hell, the GOP wants to push back the age to collect on SS or to go on Medicare. What are we supposed to do? Wait, but not work?

Red team, Michael (I think that's his name, red head) Also, a guy from the blue team had to go home because his wife's pregnant and went into labor. Alas, not Jake. Edit and yes, Jake is the annoying seal dude who can't play well with the others.

anyway

thanks.

doesnt spoil it for me at all.

ya

michael was a jerk'ish almost right up there with jake. but not near as bad. doesnt hurt him leaving.

hm... what blue guy has a preg wife, and why teh hell didnt they take it into consideration before doing the show. i remember previous week it saying someone was leaving unexpectedly.

hope wasnt the military guy that is so quiet, voted against jake a couple weeks ago. i like him. he is class.

17. I just checked
The guy that left was Billy. He was a restaurant operator. So, not the military guy. Apparently she was doing okay, but then there were sudden complications, so that's why he had to leave. I don't care for Michael either and wasn't sorry to see him go. He did a little fist pump when the blue team had to lose a member. Not classy at all.

21.  I don't mind some of that
It's a reality based show so there has to be some of that. I just hope it doesn't overwhelm the show and become the main focus. It's so funny because I'm far from a gun enthusiast. But it's so compelling to watch! I thought the stage coach elimination round was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on reality television.

12. I hope so.
The show really doesn't need the drama he brings. The competition is interesting enough on its own. THough it was funny to see him move outside in a snit.

24. Santa Clarita, California
Santa Clarita is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County, California, United States and the twenty-fourth largest city in the state of California. The 2010 US Census reported the city's population grew 16.7% from the year 2000 to 176,320 residents. It is located about 35 miles (56 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, and occupies most of the Santa Clarita Valley. It is a notable example of a U.S. edge city or boomburb. The FBI rates it as the sixth safest city in the United States with at least 100,000 inhabitants. (Nearby Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, in Ventura County, traditionally alternate between the first and second spots on the list.) Santa Clarita was ranked as number 18 of the top 100 places to live by Money magazine in 2006.<2>

funny how often that keeps coming up with these big-name corporate brands (Abercrombie & Fitch, etc.)

13. But they're not racist, so stop saying that
Mexicans are entitled to the same treatment as Blacks, so how could Bass Pro be racist? I predict they'll hire the same attorneys that Wal-Mart hired, tie the complaints up into a zillion little knots, and claim that because every individual case is different, there's no grounds for proceeding on a mass basis, and certainly no "pattern or practice" of discrimination that can attach to Bass Pro.
