What a shame. Tony Bennett had to explain/justify his statements.
Yesterday, he answered Howard Stern's question with another question of who exactly are "the terrorists".

“They flew the plane in, but we caused it,” Bennett responded, “because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.”

One day later, the 85-year-old singer took to his latest stage, Facebook, and wrote, ” There is simply no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks on our country.”

Bennett also cited his World War II experience as shaping his position that “war is the lowest form of human behavior.

“I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world,” he said.

1. That was truth to power and they crushed him
just as they knew they could.

4. I think he's trying to say that only the USA can get away with collateral damage.
It's fine for us to cause the death of hundreds of thousand innocent lives when we protect big oil's business in the Middle East or cause millions of children to starve to death because of our selfish meddling in Africa, but it's immoral when anyone reacts in kind.

After all, those folks are Muslims and third world foreigners. Those lives aren't worth a fraction of one of "ours".

5. One day you will realize that we the people are the collateral damage of the corporations
and of the greed that controls this nation.

14. Wow. I don't think that.
But yes, we did some crappy shit to people on the other side of the world. In Buddhism, it is called the preceeding moment.

7. Anyone who didn't see that coming is naive.
His clarification is eloquent. I agree with absolutely EVERYTHING he has said. Unfortunately, it is still too soon to scrutinize the truth of 9-11. Anyone who does will get hammered, discredited, ridiculed. Why should Tony Bennett suffer for speaking out in his twilight years? I admire him. Besides, his clarification is not a recantation of his previous statements.

9. I agree. My contention is that he even had to explain and clarify his

statements which in turn are a form of recantation when he begins a sentence with "I'm sorry".

Tony Bennett is about to introduce a new CD of duets. Too many people are financially invested in this project and ANY statement that isn't entertaining and politically benign has to be extinguished. He had to make a follow-up statement after others compelled him to do so.

On second thought, he wouldn't want to go there anyway.

12. Of course he has to explain it
Here in the land of the High Church of Redemptive Violence, it's heresy to suggest that the Wrath of Holy Violence might be visited on us, its most ardent and faithful practitioners. Our god would not turn on us! It's somebody else's fault, always and forevermore.

15. He spoke the truth. When more people begin doing so
it will become easier but it's clear that those in power cannot bear to hear the facts. And he's right about war also, it IS the lowest form of human behavior.

17. Which part of that backs off his statement?
Sounded like a clarification to me. He simply affirmed that his first statement did not mean he hated America, I did not hear him retract or apologize for anything he said.
