US justice department paid $16 for muffins
Muffins costing $16 (£10) and cookies at $10 were among the "extravagant and wasteful" conference spending by the US justice department, a report has found.

Critics voiced outrage at the spending shown in the internal audit, including $8 coffees and $32-per-person snacks.

The justice department said it accepted the findings, adding that it had taken steps since 2009 "to ensure that these problems do not occur again".

The US owes more than $14tn and has an annual budget deficit topping $1.4tn.

9. don't forget subway. That place is just eerie where it pops up.
For some reason the Nuclear Prototype Training Unit in Charleston has one inside the main building. Walk into this windowless bomb shelter building swarming with armed MP's with M16's and there is one tucked into the alley on the side next to the security entrance.

2. I want to see the total amount of money spent during the 8 years under Bush
for muffins, cookies, conferences, etc.
Funny how they pick August 2009 for the article (the time right before the expense rules were changed).
And how many of those $500 per bottle bottles of wine did Bush serve to his dinner buddies at the White House over the eight years he was there?
Senator Grassley is a fine one to be whining now, he never said one word about all the money that was wasted under Bush, especially all those billions of dollars that went missing in Iraq!

5. If Grassley is so concerned about government waste, maybe he could pay back
the millions in farm subsidies collected by him and his family over the years.

3. Distant relative worked for FEMA before Katrina
Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 03:56 AM by Mimosa
Before Katrina struck NOLA, where I lived before 2005, I heard about the conferences held at Disney World and other resort type destinations.

Damn anybody who tries to excuse the financial waste based on partisan politics. No matter which party is nominally in charge the bureaucracy continues comfortably. In fact they are entrenched. Lobbyists escort the bureaucrats as they go round and round the revolving doors between corporations and federal agencies.

11. Only the tip of the iceberg.
Travel expenses for these conferences is also a waste, imo. Why can't they teleconference? Haven't they heard of "Go to Meeting"?
