There's a poll question halfway down the page. Please please answer it.
http://www.thenewstribune.com/"Do you think Tacoma teachers have justification to strike?"
76% supposedly do not support the teachers. Yet polls by USA today and the local news stations say 51% of community supports the strike. These are phone polls as opposed to the TNT's poll which a person can vote in as many times as they are willing to REFRESH the button. We know how that works here, don't we? Please help demoralized teachers.
Send a message loud and clear.
The court has ruled the teachers are in contempt and are discussing replacing them. It's getting ugly as the community is divided, teachers are exhausted after days on the picket lines and the district refuses to negotiate.
The teachers are not asking for a raise, yet this is all the media keeps harping on, how greedy they are and how it's all about wanting more money. The teachers, like all state workers in Washington, are getting a pay cut thanks to Koch money funded tax cuts voted on in this state. Unlike the other state workers, teachers are not being furloughed or working less to make up for the lost wages. How is this a pay raise? Lying, manipulative media. We at DU have seen how they work. The teachers of Tacoma are stunned by the orchestrated backlash.
The real issue that teachers face in Tacoma is a district which wants the power to arbitrarily transfer and fire at whim ( a power we all already know they will abuse), who will use NCLB to crush the unions blaming teachers for the extraordinary struggles students face in a district where 70% of them live in homes below the poverty line. I have walked the picket line with these individuals now for a week. I have never met more caring warmhearted people. They are all suffering. They want to be back at work. Their students need them.
Please help them win the PR war. Thanks DU.
