"I still love you son. Doesn't change our relationship." Young airman comes out to dad ...
By Michelle Garcia
Telling my dad that I am gay ADVOCATE.COM

A young gay airman who had been slowly chronicling his coming out process while serving overseas celebrated the first day of the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" by coming out to his YouTube followers — and his father.

Going by the username, AreYouSurprised, he called his father in Alabama to come out to him. After a few moments, and making his father promise that he would love him unconditionally, the airman said, "Dad, I'm gay."

"Gay?" his father said.

"I always have been, and I've known since forever," he replied. <snip>

Watch the video of him coming out to his dad over the phone. His dad was freakin' WONDERFUL! The poor kid was a nervous wreck. He had worried about it for 4 hours prior to calling his dad today. :(

their child is gay. He made me proud. :loveya:

My heart was in my throat for him too before his dad answered the phone! He's a lucky guy to have such a great dad. Unconditional love for your child. That's the way it's suppose to be. :loveya:

tears flowing out. so sad and so grand. emotions all over the place
good for them both.

my brother in laws came out to their parents. the hugest that i admire with these parents. the dad stood up, went to the boys and hugged them. that was it.

it is a hard one, for so many.

9. stories like this really make me wonder
what it would be like to have parents like that.

Because I don't. Mine threw me out and killed my career before it could start.

I just can't watch. I might end up wanting to... well. Break things. Into small pieces.

14. Wow.
I am sorry that happened to you, brother. I have to hope we are slowly moving towards a world where that sort of thing doesn't happen anymore.

15. Oh my god, I'm so, so sorry for that.
My mother and my uncle are both gay. I grew up in a family that had mixed reactions.
I truly wish I could give you a big hug.
