Troy Davis has been denied clemency! DUers need to take action now!
I, like many of you, have been following the case of Troy Davis with great concern for a long time now (4 years for me). I was deeply saddened to learn that the Georgia has denied Davis's bid for clemency.

While I oppose capital punishment on principle, it is barbaric and cruel, I have no little doubt that Davis is not guilty of the crime he was convicted of. Seven of the 9 none police witnesses have recanted, citing police coercion, and 3 of the original jurors have stated if they knew what they know now they would not have even convicted Troy Davis, nonetheless sentenced him to die.

An innocent man is about to murdered and I don't know what can really be done, but Amnesty International is still urging everyone to take action. Given all that we've been through I can't say I am particularly optimistic at this time, but the alternative of not doing anything while a man is murdered seems worse.

I urge everyone DUer to take action now--

I have been following this case very closely for several years now, and was very saddened and shocked to learn that Davis has been denied clemency by the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles despite the fact that significant doubts continue to plague his conviction.

This is so predictable.

4. oh no you don't. Every witness did not change his/her story. There is considerable doubt
and your vile accusation that those of us opposed to the dp, "walk on the murdered innocent" to further our cause is fucking beneath contempt.

disgusting post. just repulsive.

10. Illogical.
We don't know if he's innocent or guilty. THAT'S THE POINT OF A TRIAL.

Justice isn't served by your comments, nor those who claim he's innocent.

He deserves justice. But then, this is America. A judicial joke.

11. Whoa. 7 of 9 "eyewitnesses" have recanted.
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 01:08 PM by AtomicKitten
7 out of 9 "eyewitnesses" have come forward saying they told the police at the time they could not identify Davis but were persuaded by police. During the initial investigation the "eyewitnesses" were allowed to confer with each other and that is so against the law now. Davis had fired a gun at some point prior to the murder and at the time the ballistics were said to match, but that has since been disproved.

The Innocence Project brought forth three former jurors who testified they would never have voted the way they did had they known the above.

The whole prosecution stinks and Davis most certainly at the very least deserves a stay of execution and re-trial.

As a society we MUST get this stuff right.

Gee what group of people does that remind me of...:eyes:

To suggest that, where there is legitimate doubt or guilt that a commutation to life imprisonment would be paramount to "walking on the murdered innocent" tells so much about you. None of it good. :eyes:

21. You seem to know extremely little about this case.
Apparently you think that juries are all-knowing and all-powerful. They fucked up big time, that's why many have recanted and said they never would have voted for the DP if they knew then what they know now. He's an innocent man and you have no issues with an innocent being killed. That's sick.

37. Why is it predictable that 7 of the 9 witnesses recanted stating police
coercion was a factor in their original statement (which by the way is an admission of perjury--a felony) and three of the original jurors have stated they would not have convicted now had they known this?

Seriously, there is no other evidence linking him to the crime other than the eye witness testimony and eye witness testimony is notoriously unreliable. We had someone in Maryland convicted on crime based on six eye witnesses, was sentenced to die, and guess what--was later the first person in a capital case exonerated by DNA evidence.

Was that predictable as well?

45. You better hope you never find yourself in a similar situation.
Do you know how easy it is for any one to accuse you of anything? Would you be ok with the police coercing witnesses against you? Be careful of what you allow to be done to others for you must be willing to live under the same standard of rules.

14. I signed both the Amnesty International and the NAACP's petitions
I had phoned the Governor. He can't grant clemency, as can governors of some states.

Now, it's up to the county District Attorney to withdraw the death warrant or the Pardons Board to withdraw yesterday's decision.

The DA is not answering his phone nor accepting faxes the last time I tried. I will keep trying.

This is the thing: I don't know if he's guilty or not, but the former FBI Director Sessions agree with hundreds of thousands that THERE IS TOO MUCH DOUBT.

To me, one innocent man executed is one too many.

I just fear this is not going to have any impact. It makes me feel very powerless.... I still have great pain over the Texas case of the undoubtedly innocent man who--after loosing his children in a tragic fire--then was executed for starting that fire, despite considerable evidence that it was not arson. This one makes me terrified to see Mr. Goodhair and his pious ACT on the national stage.

22. As someone who supports the option of the DP, I do not think Troy Davis should be executed.

A reasonable compromise would be to commute his sentence to life in prison so that the issue of guilt is avoided.

His recent hearing to prove his innocence was horribly conducted by his lawyers. Their failure to put Red Cole on the stand is astonishing.
I don't know if Troy Davis is innocent, but I damn well know that there is enough doubt to not execute the man.

23. Yes that's how I feel too...
Who knows whether or not he's truly innocent.

But now there's enough doubt to make his execution that much more disturbing.

It will have been travesty enough for him to have spent his whole life in prison if he is innocent...

29. The railroading & pending murder of Troy Davis...
has been a priority of mine for many years, thru Amnesty, and I've written, called, and protested on his behalf, but I do fear nothing more can be done to bring him proper justice.

The more who answer Amnesty's final call for action, the better chance Mr. Davis has of getting his reprieve, so thank you for posting this link!

Do it, now, people! Troy Davis' time has almost run out!

51. NPR is reporting a last minute appeal by his defense attorneys:
Death Row Inmate Troy Davis' Attorneys File Last-Minute Appeal: "Attorneys for Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis are filing a last-minute appeal to halt his execution later today. Defense attorney Brian Kammer tells The Associated Press he will file the appeal in Butts County Superior Court, south of Atlanta, when it opens later Wednesday. The appeal asks a judge to block the execution. It argues that ballistic testing that linked Davis to the shooting was flawed." (The Associated Press)
