1. Pretty close. They'd do the filling, the front window, and check the air pressure and wiper blades.
I don't remember them doing the side windows or asking about the ashtray.

8. I used to do side windows if they were dirty (and it wasn't raining)
Never emptied ashtrays, though. Mind you, this was back when we all wore onions on our belts, as that was the fashion at the time...

22. Yup
We used to say, "give me five bees for a quarter." You see, back in those days, rich men would ride around in Zeppelins, dropping coins on people...

4. I am old enough
to remember the days when service stations had attendents. One would check air pressure on all tires while the tank was being filled, another would wash all the windows and the third would check oil level, hoses, etc...

5. Our local station does the pit stop routine.
Run by an old man, our neighbor up the street, for the last 50 years, in fact.
Check oil, wash windows, check air pressure, too, if I ask.

I go to him because when I need some small repair, he will be prompt and inexpensive.

But I must say, they do not stop traffic for me!!!!!!

6. There is a full-service station down the block from me.
But you pay (a lot) for the convinience.

10. In New Jersey I think they are all full service.
On the turnpike yesterday the guy did my windows and asked if he could check the oil. LOL, and their gas is the cheapest around this neck of the woods.

11. Awesome. They never stopped traffic for us, but we did get Texaco suckers and
Oscar Meyer Wiener whistles. :) They checked the oil, topped it off if it was low, washed the windows and checked air pressure in the tires.

There's no way in hell anyone in today's USA society would EVER be lowered to touch AN ASHTRAY??? OH! the disgust and horror of it! I can see the drama now. :eyes:

I loved the traffic stopping. :) NICE guy! Great video! Thanks for posting it!

At least I have not seen any for at least 30 years.

16. NJ is probably the only state where it's illegal to pump your own gas
It's full, but not as full as the video. They pump your gas and clean your front window if they feel like it. That's pretty much it.

25. Oregon does it as well.
Always throws me a bit when I go up there.

The service at the Oregon stations varies. I've gone to stations where they only pump your gas, and I've been in others where the windows were cleaned, tire pressure checked, and we're asked whether we have any trash to dispose of.

Never had one stop traffic for me though.

15. When hubby worked in stations decades ago they did a lot...
They vacuumed the carpets, washed the windows, checked oil, air filter and wiper blades and you got a free care wash, too. All you needed to do was get a minimum of 8 gallons of gas at the full service pump which cost about 40 cents a gallon.

They hoped to sell what a car needed - oil, blades or filter. But the labor for those was free.

Because then I'd feel I had to tip them.

26. My dad laughed his arse off when I tipped a gas attendant.
"This is Oregon. They get paid a decent wage. Only tourists and California refugees tip." He said it's not expected...tipping your gas station guy is like tipping the toll collector at a bridge, or your garbageman. It's a nice gesture during the holidays, but other than that it's just "weird".

I've hit on a compromise. No tip for pumping gas, but it you wash my windows or otherwise go above and beyond mere refueling, you get a tip. Most are still shocked when I offer it, and I've had a few turn me down (including several who have said they can be fired for accepting them), but most are happy to take it. I don't care if it identifies me as a Californian. :)

20. And they used to give you free dishes and drinking glasses
and kids got free toys at gas stations when I was a little kid in the mid-1950s. I remember getting a plastic fireman's hat from the local Texaco station.

seeing attendants standing outside waving as people went by.
