Copyright Troll’s Assets Targeted for Seizure

By David Kravets September 19, 2011 | 11:29 am |

The legal woes of Las Vegas-based copyright-trolling firm Righthaven continued Sunday when one of its creditors moved to seize its assets.

The development comes a week after the deadline passed for the former litigation factory to pay defendant Wayne Hoehn $34,000 in legal fees for successfully defending himself against a Righthaven copyright lawsuit. Righthaven had asked U.S. District Judge Philip Pro of Nevada to stay the fee award, saying it might slip into bankruptcy if forced to pay.

No stay was granted. So Hoehn’s attorney, Marc Randazza, asked Judge Pro on Sunday to “authorize the U.S. Marshalls to execute Hoehn’s judgment through seizure of Righthaven’s bank accounts, real and personal property, and intangible intellectual property rights for levy, lien, auction or other treatment appropriate for satisfaction of Hoehn’s judgment.”

Randazza in an e-mail said the company has made “no effort whatsoever” to pay up.

2. Chew it up and spit it out - in a strictly legal sense, of course
I want metaphorical heads on pikes to serve as a warning to lawyers & business-types with too much time on their hands, too much evil in their imagination & too much money for launching harebrained schemes.

4. Good. I am all for cyber entrepeneurialism
For example, I wish I'd had the foresight to purchase the domain "ibm.com" in 1993 for $30. But this kind of stuff is malignant

6. I'm all about entrepreneurship as well
but Righthaven's business model is essentially parasitic - sucking the life out of its 'host,' consisting of millions of internet users who repost content without concern for their personal profit. I haven't heard it discussed much, but it seems like an ideal way for TPTB to create fear throughout the blogosphere, thereby limiting the transfer of information that may not be in their best interests. IMO it's just another facet of censorship.

9. My only regret is that the founders of Righthaven LLC won't be personally ruined.
