Credit where credit is due
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 06:47 AM by Pab Sungenis
After the myriad insults of the first two years of the Obama Administration toward gays, we all had good reason to expect that the Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal bill was pure eyewash, just a cheap photo-op with a thousand little ways to keep the policy alive. Especially since the Administration was, up until this morning, still defending the policy in court.

It was a pleasant surprise to see that the policy is finally dead and gone. It's very nice to see Obama's "evolution" in the area of LGBT*.* people finally bearing fruit.

So credit where credit is due.

Credit to the President for signing the bill and issuing his certification.
Credit to the lawsuits that forced his hand.
Credit to the Senators who finally forced the bill through.
Credit to everyone fighting this policy for the past 17 years.

That dawn outside really does mark a new day today, and despite the best efforts of some to spit on us for our prior doubts, this is our day and we're going to celebrate.

11. I will clarify -
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 08:06 AM by TBF
I am thrilled he did this - people should not be discriminated against based on sexual orientation.

But I focus more on economics and what he has done for the majority of folks in this country - the working class. Unemployment is still high and that's a big problem. It didn't cost him anything to repeal DADT (and with the exception of the Koch Bros., many billionaires couldn't care less about DADT), more of a sign of the times than anything.

I have no problem giving him credit for getting it repealed, but the economy is going to make or break his re-election, not DADT.

13. Agreed.
And it's nice that he's finally going on the offense with the economy too.

16. Yes - can agree with you there
I like what I've heard in the past week. I support higher taxes for the wealthy and really excited to see him push that.

8. Not "nothing" but
nothing that impacts the average voter in ways that are recognizable. That's why his numbers are so low.

Now with the jobs bill fight, people are actually starting to see the President they voted for.

14. why limit it to the last 17 years?
yes, dadt was in effect for 17 years, but those who fought for equal treatment of homosexuals in the military before that deserve credit, too.

in the scheme of things, the last 17 years was merely the last chapter of a very long struggle.

17. Good points.
I was specifically referring to DADT but you are correct about a struggle that goes back much longer, and those brave pioneers going back at least to World War II need to be thanked.
