S.F. woman stabs home intruder to death
S.F. woman stabs home intruder to death

A woman fatally stabbed a San Francisco man after he allegedly broke into her Bayview home and tried to choke her, police said today.

The woman, whom police have not identified, heard noises in her home on the 700 block of Kirkwood Avenue at about 4:47 a.m. Sunday and encountered Anthony Payne, 40, who tried to choke her, police said.

She fought back and stabbed him with a knife, killing him, police said. Investigators have not released any more details on the incident.

15. Yeah, this is not the place where you meant to break in and choke someone.
And, gee too bad, you died because of your little mistake.

2. Well, I don't know what to say
She was clearly defending herself. But I am sure someone out there will develop a theory that the burglar was somehow murdered in cold blood.

13. I have no doubt some will claim his rights were violated,
He didn't get due process, and the woman "should just have retreated", while simultaneously claiming if she had a gun she would have shot herself.

We hear that kind of crap in the Guns forum all the time.

4. The police were busy elsewhere shooting innocent bystanders..
From the same article:

Less than an hour later, police shot two bystanders while firing on a suspect who was allegedly brandishing a gun on the 400 block of Broadway in North Beach. The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries to their lower bodies.

5. Good for her. She was lucky.
Statistically speaking, a knife is a very bad weapon for self defense, both because it becomes a contest of strength, and because it's easy even for someone who knows what they're doing to cut themselves.

9. Not knowing all of the circumstances
but likely she didn't have any other alternative that would allow her to be safe. If she was strong enough and able to immobilize that attacker long enough to restrain him that might work. But probably about anything short of seriously wounding or killing would have resulted her still being in danger as the attacker would at that point to do anything to escape including kill.

So in reality she didn't have much of an alternative.

10. In the UK she would have been arrested "on suspicion of murder".

And many DUers seem to approve of this policy.

The US handles these incidents a lot better.

11. Bayview is a scary neighborhood
the kind where you don't walk the streets at night unless you're looking for some serious trouble.

12. But if she had used a gun to protect herself, many would be calling for more gun control.

I know, that's stupid, huh? But it's not MY argument.
