World's biggest sperm bank, Cryos, tells redheads: We don't want your semen

The world's largest sperm bank is telling redheads to keep their semen.

Demand for ginger-haired donors is so low that Cryos International says they needn't bother donating.

2. Quite often
carriers of the red hair gene don't have red hair. If two carriers match up, there's likely to be a red haired child, and possibly some disappointed parents.

5. That is true.
My cousin and her husband are not redhaired, and two of their kids are.

6. My parents were "black irish". Four of their eight children are redheads
I also have black hair (now grey) but I'm willing to bet I carry the redhead gene. Going to be kind of hard for them to screen people just on appearances.

7. The rest of the world is just jealous.
We are just a prettier people. An unfortunate brownheaded parent looking at their donor-derived redheaded child would be forced to confront their inferiority on a daily basis. It's only natural they'd avoid that, so as to help perpetuate their self-delusions of equality :P

10. "We don't want their Neanderthal genes."
I guess that's what they're saying. There has been some talk about red hair, blue eyes, and fair skin being evidence of Neanderthal genes. Personally, I love redheads.

17. That's interesting
I've speculated that in the past. The Neanderthals had a much longer time to evolve those traits in the northern latitudes. Since there appears to be some intermixing with Neanderthals, that certainly seems like a possible origin of red hair, blue eyes, and fair skin.

I can tell my dad that he's part Neanderthal, since he has all of those traits. But he's a fundie christian and wouldn't believe any of it. I, or my siblings, didn't get the red hair. That's fine with me. Though the first girl I had a crush on had red hair. It looks better on girls,:loveya: at least the pretty ones.

18. Well, it's just a theory. They have the complete Neanderthal
DNA mapped, and apparently the gene for red hair is one of the ones we have in common, so it's certainly a possibility, although not certain.

I can't see that it makes any difference really. Apparently only Europeans share some genes with the Neanderthals, according to current thinking. I guess that's where the paths crossed all those millennia ago.

14. You'd think they'd learn some basic genetic facts if they're seeking semen -
- as the parents hair color has nothing to do with creating a redhead. It's a recessive gene and BOTH parents must have the gene somewhere in their ancestry to produce a redhead. You could easily choose semen from a brunette who had a Great x 5 redheaded grandmother and - providing the female had redheaded ancestry - still get a redhead.

I know. My parents were both brunettes and I have red hair. My aunts and uncles are all brunettes and each has at least one red haired child. A little family history work discovered red hair 3 and 4 generations back for both parents. No color photos then so we didn't initially know.

I was lucky enough to find a dark-haired spouse with red hair in his ancestry and we have a redheaded child. I have a feeling some of those wanting a dark haired child will be in for surprises!
