Michael Moore: I went into the polls to vote for a black man and got a white man!
It was Bill Maher who originally said something like that. It wasn't funny then, and isn't funny now.

Uggh. His 15 minutes can't end fast enough! :puke: :eyes:

You should make a list of all liberal and lefty public figures who have said something negative about Obama and/or one of his policies.

That way we know who to scream " STOP BEING MEAN TO OBAMA" at.

34. No, but racial determinism is definitely the enemy of liberalism.
The implication of his statement is that any blacks who are liberal aren't making an informed choice, aren't even capable of making an informed choice, between competing political viewpoints. If you're black, you have to think and act a certain way, or you're no true Scotsman African American.

47. Moore supported Nader at first and helped Nader split the Dem
vote in Florida which is why Florida was won by a hair thin margin or at least by enough to steal the election. It was not until after it was evident that Gore needed Florida that Moore asked his supporters to ignore his previous statements about Dem's and vote for Gore...

108. Nader is not hated by Dems, he is hated by a small
minority who cover for the Republicans' crime of treason in 2000, by diverting attention away from the actual crime, and pointing fingers at what was a perfectly legal, democratic excercise in an attempt to redirect the anger that should have swept the country as a result of that stolen election, in a completely different and totally irrelevant direction.

The election would have been stolen no matter what. It was planned and the SC decision was only part of the many other illegal activities that contributed to the crime.

What you are doing is perfectly ludicrous. It is the equivalent of, in the aftermath of a huge bank heist, blaming innocent and perfectly legal depositors for putting money in the bank before the Big Heist, therefore helping the robbers get MORE than they should have. Thereby placing the focus on something completely irrelevant to the Heist itself.

This garbage has contributed hugely, and is used by rightwingers also with a vested interest in not addressing the treason committed by their party, to undermining the efforts of people actually interested in educating the public about that crime, which was pre-meditated and which nothing was going to stop.

Nader and anyone else who wants to, can legally run for office in this country. He did nothing wrong, but thanks for ignoring what Vincent Bugliosi proved was actual treason in his book 'None Dare Call it Treason'. The felons on the SC thank those who consistently attempt to redirect attention away from the massive crime they committed against the US Constitution and the American people.

147. Repeating talking points over and over doesn't make them true.
I can't help it if you don't know your history. Or if you think that most Democrats hate Nader, quite the contrary. He's highly respected on the left, except for, as I said, a small disgruntled minority who will never accept the fact that when a candidate loses, it's either because of foul play, or he did not inspire the voters. In Gore/Bush it was a combination of the two.

Over 300,000 Democrats voted for Bush, proving my point above, far more than for Nader. Who do you blame for that? Maybe the party should not have chosen Lieberman as VP.

And most of those Nader voters would not have voted for Gore anyhow.

But despite all of that, Gore won.

Then the Republican criminals on the SC stole the election for Bush.

That's all there is to know about it. The only crime committed that day was committed by the SC, a day of infamy in this country's history.

The rest was all legal. The Dems who voted for Bush. Nader running for office. All of that was legal so there is no point in carrying on about it unless you don't believe in Democracy.

Gore won and the SC stole it, period.

excellent proposals but have been completely ignored. Which your comment, ironically, proves. Seems you are unaware of any proposals other than this one.

And it's extremely bad policy to use Medicare as a bargaining chip with Republicans. I thought most Democrats agreed on that.

"He will veto any bill that takes one dime from the Medicare benefits seniors rely on without asking the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations to pay their fair share,"

That's a statement from WH rep. He should have stopped before he got to the 'without asking the wealthiest Americans'. One has nothing to do with the other.

This idea of using the Social Safety net programs as bargaining chips is a hugely bad policy, but has become a hallmark of this President's negotiating policies.

24. I don't know what it is, but Americans just can't talk about race w/o saying stupid shit.
I generally like Michael Moore. Even when I don't agree with him, I'm glad there's somebody raising the points he's raising. But the topic of race seems to have a mind-boggling effect on Americans of all philosophies. Often, (but not always) it's simply an excuse to quit thinking.

Of course when actual racists deny housing, deny bank loans, or deny jobs to people, or inculcate a belief in different values & abilities based on race, the topic needs to be discussed and the injustice rectified. The value and the rights of the individual should come first in a liberal democracy. When Moore equates conservative policies with whiteness and liberality with blackness, he slurs the free will and the thought processes of everyone.

It's sloppy thinking from a guy who should know better. It's inherently illiberal.

79. Listen, what this OP is doing is exactly what the did to Jim Webb
with his book. Lift a few words out of context and hang them on the wall solo, then call them horrible. I defended Webb as well, and I hate his guts. Think this through for a moment, 'how does it matter?' Ok. The President wrote books in which he writes dialog for other people, quotes and best memory recollections. The President also recorded those books in his own voice. This means is it possible to play an audio of the President saying all sorts of shite, and one can say 'that's right out of his book'. Does it matter that the President, in his book, is quoting someone else, or does it just matter that he wrote and spoke those words?
Let me offer you a Snopes page that addresses right wingers doing exactly that to the President's books, take a look at them, and tell me if the context matters. All of these tactics are two way streets. Any cheap trick done to another can be just as cheaply done to yourself, this is why cheap tricks are for cheap dicks.

111. MM likes the sound of his own voice.
Believe me, I've been to enough events where he spoke. At times his mouth ran while his brain dis-engaged. Sad to see.

Dare to criticize the president, even if that criticism is valid, and under the bus you go.

134. Not sure that accusing the President of not being black/acting white is a valid criticism.
Moore would have been better to say what he meant directly rather than try to use Obama's race against him. Tried to be clever, didn't work out.

130. Really Michael?
Race didn't enter into my decision to vote for Obama.

The fact that's he's black didn't even hit me till the night he won the election. Then it was a rather emotional moment for me because I realized how far we had come as a nation. I'm 54 years old and remember the civil rights movement of the sixties.

133. Because he knows so much about being black
Obama has to deal with most of the racism on the political right, but as we have seen, some racism does indeed come from the left.

There's outright aggressive racism and there's implicit unintentional racist attitudes built on stereotypes and assumptions that are not malicious or hateful, but still have gone unchallenged.

From Obama's 2004 DNC speech...
"Go into any inner city neighborhood, and folks will tell you that government alone can’t teach our kids to learn — they know that parents have to teach, that children can’t achieve unless we raise their expectations and turn off the television sets and eradicate the slander that says a black youth with a book is acting white."

162. How so?
It seems to me that calling a black person "white" is racism. I think the term that used to be tossed about was "oreo". It's racism, and sometimes internalized racism.

164. Obama is bi-racial. He is half white.
It's not about calling "a black person 'white'". In a parallel universe, Barack Obama is a white person that people are calling black.

And anyway, you might want to see for yourself what Michael Moore actually said, and the context in which he said it.

166. Look at what is meant by "racist"
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 06:17 PM by Stinky The Clown
It has a meaning. When you use it to mean something less than its full meaning, you make the word meaningless by that amount.

If Michael Moore is a racist, what is a Ku Klux Klan member?

edit to change "work" to "word"

167. You misunderstand, and I disagree with you.
I didn't say Michael Moore was racist - I said 'it was a racist thing to say'. There's a difference. I don't think Michael Moore is racist, but that doesn't mean he isn't incapable of uttering racially insensitive things. Anyway, I watched the video and it wasn't quite what the OP suggested.

However, Michael Moore aside, ascribing specific behavior to a race is racist, imo. Saying that you voted for the 'black half' of Obama is a racist statement. Saying someone is 'acting white' is racist. And it's all very disrespectful to individuals.
