Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

"By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over."

-- Rep. John Fleming (R-LA)
, in an interview on MSNBC, on why as a small business owner he can't afford a tax increase.

For ONE THIRD of the $400,000 he has left over.

For ONE THIRD of what this damned whining little bitch diaper considers a pittance, every paycheck would literally be almost gravy.

Dorothy Parker was right when she said "if you want to know what God thinks about money, just look at the people he gives it to . . ."

Her approach: "He did NOT say 'By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.' What he DID say was 'By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.'

See?

115. But the bigger point is that he has no point. He was saying
that of the x million his companies makes that after rents and wages and costs there is that 600k and when he feeds his (very hungry) family that leaves only 400k to reinvest in business.

He said all this to explain how unfair the increase in taxes on millionaires were.
Does he think the taxes are on the gross income?
Business expenses are all deductions.
If all but 200k go back into the business that is the only part he pays taxes on. His would not even go up.

And if anything... people in a situation where they might have to pay some extra taxes can reinvest enough into the business to get them below that trigger amount.
Assholes.

Some people ( I use the term loosely) should just shut up but when your positions are a stupid as the Republican position on taxes. They need to avoid any mention of taxes and try and continue to wrap themselves in the flag and cross.

18. Sad that DUers are insulting small business owners.
$6 million is a small business. It is small businesses that created most of the jobs over the last 20 years.

Anybody consider asking how big his business was 10 years ago? How many people new employees he's hired in 10 years?

Reinvesting is critical to the success of small businesses.

34. It's his evasion, and misleading language that is being criticized here.
If he had come out and said - "I make $200,000 as a SALARY (not 'feeding my family' as if he has hungry kids at home - which he does NOT)from this business that I have in addition to my job with a salary in Washington, and I believe that I should not have to sacrifice any of it in taxes or risk any of it reinvesting in jobs or benefits for my low paid employees. I like my standard of living, and I want to keep it." we could say that he was being forthright.

Both of my parents own small businesses, one owns an oriental rug store, and one is a filmmaker. I am very pro-small business.

What I don't like is this guy putting himself in the same category.

55. 6.67 net profit percent
That ain't great in the world of business, but it ain't shabby. I do about half the 6M in business but at much lower gross profit margins, and for the year as of July; I sit at .02% net profit. I am elated because at the same time last year, I was negative 3.4%. To get there it took a lot of hurt. I paid myself less than 20K for the year on 1.5 million in sales. Last year I put in 40K by taking out loans to keep the business alive. Risk/reward/ or stupid. Not all small businesses do that well, getting 6.67 percent. Some do much better. Some large corporations like GE do much better, and pay ZERO taxes on profits.

123. in a way, paying minimum wage is gov subsidizing business
since minimum wage won't pay rent, and food in a lot of places
the workers are now depending on section 8 (in fl) housing help
and food stamps, both of which...are gov...

oh dear he's being tax subsidized, instantly raise paychecks for all workers to avoid socialism in his business....

(does anyone think he'll stand by those principles?)

anything short of 'living wage'(30-35k/year depending on area) is actually gov subsidizing business
by trying to helping people (not saying it's wrong, just sayin 'haves' should mind what they say whilst tapdancing on landmines)

31. Heard it on Hartmann. He estimated "feeding my family" cost $200,000 a year.
I know folks who make $200,000 a year. It's a nice living. In some areas (and let me tell you Louisiana is one of them) it's a really, really nice living. Not screaming rich but the house is nice, the kids can go to college, you can have vacations and put away for the future. He remarked that $400,000 wasn't enough to let him improve or expand his business. He could hire 100 people and give them an okay living, he could buy into another franchise, he could make property improvements for which he would get a tax cut and employ people, etc. So he's completely blowing smoke there.

But also, as Hartmann pointed out, he completely conflated his business taxes with his household taxes. If he hasn't separated the two he's a fool, and I don't believe that. He's blowing that dog whistle, hoping the fearful will only hear "They're taking food out of my family's mouth!"

he has 400,000 left over for hiring more people, expanding the business, capital purchases ect.

Unfortunately, he likely divides that by 100 and keeps it all.

It seems like we get repigs spewing their indefensible nonsense on a hourly basis. When I saw the story in the L.A. Times yesterday that Obama wants to tax the rich (finally!), I told my wife "You watch - tomorrow Limpballs will be crying "class warfare!" the minute his show starts." About 30 minutes later, I see the story online about douchebag Ryan crying "class warfare!" on Faux an hour or two earlier. We need to call out this horseshit NOW. If anyone tries to propagate this nonsense to me, they'll get an earful on what class is waging war on whom.

The poor widdle thing.

Everyone in this thread is just picking on the dear little job creator. Bunch of meanies!!!

They should be so grateful to Fleming for providing low-wage jobs they'd be willing to powder his delicate little tush three times a day.

And if they really wanted more jobs like they say, they'd tell him how sorry they are that he struggles so and then they'd sing him a sweet little lullaby about ending Medicare.

...several fast-food franchises. I worked at these restaurants from the
time I was nine years old. I remember what the overhead was and the mark-up
was, as well.

I remember my father telling me that a medium Diet Coke cost the customer about
$1, but it cost my father about 5 cents--that included the product, labor, the
cup, straw, lid and the rent on the building.

Seriously. If this man claims that he has sales revenues of $6 million from Subway franchises,
with his gross sales at $600,000--I say he's lying. He's grossing much more than that.

And if he's not, then he's putting way too much meat on those sandwiches!

Don't follow this guy's logic. Part of business is overhead. $400 K is a pretty nice profit after expenses. I've worked my ass off and I'll be lucky to break even with my business this year (and taxes are not the reason).

Delusional, narcicistic, out-of-touch, arrogant -- there are too may descriptors to list here. This guy is attempting to portray himself as a victim of "class warfare". His "trials and travails" need to be made available to a wider audience, so that the electorate gets an accurate portrayal of how well-heeled conservatives picture themselves (to the exclusion of millions more that wish they had it so good) within the economic spectrum.

120. And after a few moments of thought, a couple random ones...
I've worked at a Scrubway before. Three of them, actually, owned by two different franchisers. I'm sure many of you have worked the (even relatively) modern version of fast food -- for me, it was about 20 years ago, and from what I've seen the tendency on things has only gotten worse, not better. With that in mind...

1. Subway's don't 'expand'. There IS no hiring 'new' workers, there is hiring REPLACEMENT workers, with the rare exception of massive new business openings in that area. That MAY prompt the hiring of ONE more worker for busy shifts.
2. The only time #1 is not true is when building a completely new (or establishing a new) franchise. Then there is a finite number of workers based on the amount of traffic in the area.
3. The amount of equipment is finite, and is contracted to be REPAIRED until no longer possible to be repaired. This is covered in a monthly cost, and is considered part of overhead.
4. Food Costs are part of overhead, as is building maintenance and so forth -i IE, lighting, rent, etc.
5. Since there is NO cost not covered in overhead, and NO need to hire new workers, and NO way to 'expand' your business without purchasing a whole new franchise...

...where does the 'reinvestment' part come in? That's right -- it doesn't. He said that just to make it sound like his $400,000 was 'even less' than that, oh the horror.

C'mon baby and eat the rich,

But there's one good thing that happens
When you toss your pearls to swine

But go real good with wine
