Iconic photo of the times - re: Borders closing

Reddit user Jessers25 took the photo embedded above at a Borders going out of business sale. In the photo, a Thomas Jefferson quote sat on a bare wall with a pile of dismantled bookshelves: “I cannot live without books.”

The photo has spawned hundreds of comments and a raging debate about the future of bookstores.

2. Borders and B&N killed the independents. Amazon.com killed Borders.
Kill Amazon.com before it kills everything else in retail.

A world without books or places (or money) to shop. That will surely suck.

5. Yes, and Borders and Barnes & Noble killed off
B Dalton's and Walden Books, which co-existed pretty nicely with small independents for years. I was a reader and book store-lover nearly all my life. In recent years, the internet gobbles up my time instead of books, sad to say.

6. so, so true. I must say I'm so glad I live in a town (tiny) that supports
an independent bookstore.
