All good things must come to an end (my bumper stickers will be coming off)

I'm told I need a more neutral car to win the election to city council next year. Last look.

1. You should always be yourself, including your image.
If you attempt to win election by creating a false image, if you win the election, your voters will be disappointed with the false image you created for them when they look at your record and note that the false image didn't equal your actions.

12. Sorry, I disagree: there are some games you have to play
It's a fact of life. Kind of like not having facial tattoos when you apply for an office job.

2. Yes, take the bumper stickers off.
You do not want to start out by pissing people off just by the bumper stickers on your car.

And as for the Don't Put My Flag on Your Foreign Car one, a lot of cars with American brands are made overseas, and a lot with Foreign brands are made here. So unless you check the VIN number, you can't know.

7. I have a friend (ironically Republican) who was upset to find his wife's new Mercury
was made in Mexico. They had to get rid of it last month.

Of course, by then the car was 20 years old.

13. My Honda was made in Canada, according to the VIN.
If it had not been for the Germans and the Japanese we'd still be driving crap that barely lasts 50,000. I recall all too clearly when the odometer only had 5 digits on it, because it just wasn't expected for any car to go more than that. Those who could afford to do so bought a new car every two years, because after two years they'd seen their best days.

3. elected office is of no value then
I strongly encourage you to resist the temptation to moderate your stance or compromise in any way for the sake of winning office.

If you abandon what you have to say for the sake of winning people over, you have not really won them over.

10. Oh for God's sake
This attitude is why "real" liberals so rarely win elections...

It could be why liberals winning elections makes so little difference.

18. silly
Notice here that I am not saying that it makes no difference how people vote, nor am I saying that there is no difference between the two parties. You seem confused on those points or you would not have thrown out the cliche you just threw out.

Clearly, if once having elected Democrats people experienced a significant difference in real terms in their actual lives, no Republican would ever win again. That is what I am shooting for. What are you shooting for?

Nonsense. Some people (about a third of the country) like the direction we take it. Others (another third or so) really hate it when we go in that direction. Their standards and ours are different.

20. how could you believe that?
Edited on Sun Sep-18-11 05:53 PM by Claudia Jones
That is so negative and discouraging that it boggles the mind. Are you going to take that position into the election cycle? It can only hurt.

Thus "us versus them" nonsense is a product of cable TV and right wing propaganda. It is used to divide and conquer us, and to cripple the Democratic party.

The battle lines in the country are drawn between the haves and the have-nots, and not between the two political parties. Fight for the have-nots and you will discover that 80% or more of the general public "share our values" and have the "same standards."

4. While I agree with the sentiments of your bumper stickers
I generally avoid such. Too many assholes are inclined to vandalize a car when it says something they don't agree with.

But, yeah, politics involves leading an insanely boring public life, at times. Best of luck!

Do what you need to do to get in there.

14. Surely you can at least leave the Godfather quote!
:P

Well, at least you'll have them memorialized here on DU forever - if you don't remove the photos from your hosting site. Don't forget to post this in your journal.

And best of luck on your run - politics NEEDS you!

If you win, you can do more good from the inside than you'd be able to do from the outside shouting in.

22. Yes - they need to go.
There is indeed a game that if you don't play it, will keep you from getting into the race.

We had a Democratic candidate once who insisted she do things strictly "her way" and he campaign manager thought that was just great. I attended one of her campaign stops where she addressed an older conservative crowd. She was wearing thick wool socks with sandals, a long peasant skirt and a thick wool sweater. I don't think anyone heard much of what she had said because her appearance stopped everyone at hello.
She didn't get very many votes because no one took her seriously.
That's just the way it is.
