Ron Paul wins California GOP straw poll

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul is the winner of a straw poll conducted among Golden State Republicans.

The Texas congressman drew large, boisterous crowds of supporters for several speaking appearances at the state party convention under way this weekend at the JW Marriott in downtown Los Angeles. He won roughly 45 percent of the 833 ballots cast.

"I think the main purpose of our Constitution and political action should be the preservation of liberty," Paul told delegates on Constitution Day.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose supporters also flocked to the poll site en mass, came in second place with 29 percent of the vote.

Trailing the two top picks was former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who secured a distant third place slot with just 9 percent of the votes cast.

1. Wow...a winner with < 400 total votes.
I'd say California republicans are pretty excited about the 2012 election. Glad to see RP screwing up the storyline, though. I'd have thought Mitt would have dominated with this state's Republican voters.

3. Only the crazies turn out this early
By next year, the Mittster and all his hedge fund buddies will be ready to play ball polo and this chukker will be over.

15. Whereas if Romney won, as expected, they wouldn't be "crazies"?
I'll tell you what I fear: More of the "sane" "moderate" status quo.

16. Jaysnub, have you listened to him? He has a LOT of issues that are right on, ...
Edited on Sun Sep-18-11 03:58 AM by webDude
...some that we could learn from. Always listen to your enemies, you can learn even from them. Hey, Kucinich paired up with him on several bills.

Are you still with me? That said, I'm not saying I would vote for him, I AM suggesting that he is the most sane of the republican side.

Now, are you going to shoot the messenger and call me crazy? Close or open?

26. Where is our DEMOCRATIC anti-war candidate?
Edited on Sun Sep-18-11 01:26 PM by woo me with science
Where is our DEMOCRATIC candidate pushing for more transparency from the Federal Reserve?

People need to stop thinking in black and white and simply dismissing Ron Paul as a nut. Yes, a lot of his ideas are batshit crazy. But *some* of his votes come from people who are sick of America's bloody empire and warmongering, and sick of corruption and theft from our financial institutions.

And those people might vote Democratic if we offered them something on these issues.

Where is our DEMOCRATIC anti-war candidate? Where is our DEMOCRATIC candidate for transparency at the Federal Reserve?

on several important issues, but I also know there's lots of things about him that I object to.

BTW, the thread is simply announcing that he had won the straw poll here in California. My reference to the "crazies" is about those delegates that dominate the Republican Party at this time.

28. It's very counter-productive
to call Ron Paul supporters grazy and that way shut down dialogue and communication with them, especially when there are many things you agree with them and can work with for change on commonly shared ideas and values. Same with Nader etc. Greens etc. etc. Non violent communication is a tactic that actually works.

"We Lib Dems right or wrong and fuck all others" is very myopic partisan politics and leads nowhere. Seattle happened when many people with different political backgrounds joined with a common cause, Occupation of Wall Street is happening same way, in the non-partisan way of grass roots democracy.

18. With a pitiful 800 vote straw poll...
...it seems like the entire GOP doesn't fit the CA populations agenda, let alone Ron Paul.

5. Even by "straw poll" standards this one is...
...pretty pitiful. Only 800 or so voters? There are student body elections that out poll this! Not too relevant.

11. Ron Paul always makes sure his peeps turn out for this meaningless stuff.
What kind of paper is the Sacramento Bee? Does it cover elections of junior high class presidents, too?

Why does the GOP even had meaningless polls like this?

Even Mickey Mouse would be embarrassed by these Mickey Mouse polls.

23. Isn't Rand short for Randy? If so, then it would truly seem
that the shit does not fall far from the cow, and they are both politicians with two first names. IMO they truly do think alike in that they both eschew logic in place of personal greed.

27. Romney, Perry and Obama are the crazies.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

Every single one of the main stream candidates wants to keep on following the same failed policies that got us into the mess we are in now.

Paul warned for years about this economic downturn. Paul broke away from Reagan and the Republican party over their insane deficit spending.

Even Bush Senior called endless deficit spending "Voodoo economics" before they bribed him with the vice presidency.

Yes, I am blaming deficit spending on we Republicans and our "Starve the Beast" plans. Google it if you don't know what I am talking about. I'll take tax and spend over borrow and spend any day.

Paul is the only candidate that wants to end the American Empire which is sucking our economy dry and killing our young soldiers and foreigners in endless wars.

The only one.

Paul is the only candidate talking about actually reducing defense spending.

The only one.

Paul is the only candidate talking about regulating the bankers.

The only one.

You could have elected Kucinich in the last election, and have gotten some good changes. Instead you elected someone that is more extreme than Bush on every policy. It is literally like having Bush in for a 3rd term.

What is crazy is to keep on electing the candidate that we are told to vote for on TV.

29. "The definition of insanity is
doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result."

All the "mainstream" corporate politicians and all the financial and corrupt politicians are indeed insane, and "We the consumers" have been hypnotized by them into the consumerist insanity, forgetting much of our humanity, part of our soul.
