California joins suit to block AT&T purchase of T-Mobile
Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris and six other state attorneys general join the Justice Department's antitrust suit, say the deal would result in less competition in the wireless market.

AT&T Inc.'s $39-billion fight to take over cellular provider T-Mobile USA Inc. has taken another hit.

Just two weeks after the U.S. Justice Department sued to block the deal in federal court, California Atty. Gen. Kamala D. Harris and six other state attorneys general have joined the antitrust suit, saying the combination would create a cellular behemoth that would result in less competition in the wireless market and higher prices for consumers. Also, they said, it could kill jobs.

Harris said Friday that her review of the case "has led me to conclude that it would hinder competition and reduce consumer choice." The attorney general said she hoped to "resolve this matter in a way that will create jobs in our state, encourage a vibrant technology sector and protect competition in the marketplace."

Harris was joined by top state prosecutors in New York, Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Collectively they represent more than one-third of the U.S. population.

1. Questions arise over this...
showing my ignorance, are the state AG offices appointed or elected?

And did any of the above mentioned state AGs agree to drop their suit against the Big banks re: mortgage fraud, at the recent request of the Fed. government? ( I know that NY and another state refused to drop the suits)

Lastly, WHY would THESE particular state AGs stand up to AT&T?
And for how long, I wonder?

It is such a rarity that behemoth corporations are told "no" anymore.

2. I can only answer for NY. Schneiderman joined the suit
and he was elected. I was very happy to vote for him

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says New York has joined a federal challenge to AT&T Inc.'s merger with T-Mobile USA Inc. because of concerns about reduced competition in five metropolitan regions of the state.

4. I only know about California. Where we vote for our AG's.
Last Novemeber, K Harris, our new AG, (Democrat), had to face a rather fierce stand off with her Republcian oopponent, mostly because in her non-wisdom, she wrote an opposing view on legalizing marijuana.

Which was printed up, and readily available to read, as she knew it would be, inside the voters' guide. For everyone who voted to see. The whole tone seemed rather righteous indignation. But people in Calfornia are tired of so much of our budget going to deal with those who grow pot and the prison guard industry depending on these arrests, etc.

Her writing her little epistle was rather a dumb move poltically.

So many people did not vote for her, as nine percent of the voters actually voted third party against her and the Republican AG candidate.

I am glad to see that she has more than marijuana growing on her mind, and is standing firm against the real culprits in this era - the Big Corportions and their Finances and their Mergers.
