US defends right to pursue threats, no matter the country
The United States reserves the right to pursue terrorists unilaterally in other countries, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said Friday night in a speech at Harvard Law School.

"The United States does not view our authority to use military force against al Qaeda as being restricted solely to 'hot' battlefields like Afghanistan. We reserve the right to take unilateral action if or when other governments are unwilling or unable to take the necessary actions themselves," Brennan told a conference on "Law, Security & Liberty After 9/11: Looking to the Future."

"That does not mean we can use military force whenever we want, wherever we want. International legal principles, including respect for a state's sovereignty and the laws of war, impose important constraints on our ability to act unilaterally - and on the way in which we can use force - in foreign territories."

1. Doesn't mean that the invaded countries can't resist invasion.
Not to mention going to the U.N.

17. One would think that a person who claims to be a writer and historian

would be interested in spelling (correctly) and accuracy.

Or at least use a dictionary and/or 'spell check' for unfamiliar words.

And you are right, it is nice out. I've been to the gym, had a nice ride on the motorcycle, worked a bit on putting a lattice fence on my porch to keep an invalid dog from falling off. We built him an access ramp last year because he couldn't get up the two steps, and now he wobbles toward the edge of the porch.

It has been nice here all day.

Been there, done that.

Good to know we still respect other countries sovereignty. :sarcasm:

So how will we be when another country 'invades' America, 'from good leads on terrorist cells'. Will we be magnanimous and help or will we declare war and go apeshit!?

Ya apeshit, it is more Americas style then diplomacy.

10. It's a good thing that I am not President ...
because if we were attacked by a terrorist, I would declare war on the leader and his organization.

If I knew that the leader was definitely in a foreign nation, I would ask the government for its aid in capturing the leader and fighting against the terrorist organization.

If they cooperated, I would make every effort to avoid unnecessary damage to the nation and I would try to rebuild whatever damage our forces caused. I would under no circumstances attempt to change their government.

If they refused to cooperate, I would do everything within my power to capture the leader and destroy the organization and that might well mean attacking the armed forces of the nation who was harboring the terrorists. Before I launched the attack, I would inform the nation that the United States was not responsible for whatever damage occurred in our efforts and that while we would try to avoid unnecessary damage, we would not repair it.

After we had achieved our goal, we would just leave. Once again, I would not involve our country in nation rebuilding nor would I try to install a representative democracy.

The United States military is great at destroying things but we are not very good at promoting democracy.

12. you could never be President
sometimes you gotta kill a bunch of people and expend a lot of military hardware in order to keep the folks that put you in office happy.

and that's the way it goes.

Second thought. If you were President, don't ever read "war is a racket" by Smedley Butler.

I'm outa sarcasm and other tags at the moment. Please do forgive me.
