Shuler (DINO-NC) , others call for Obama to approve T-Mobile acquisition
By NICK EATON, SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF
Published 10:18 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2011

A group of 16 House Democrats is calling for President Obama to direct the Department of Justice to approve AT&T's proposed acquisition of Bellevue-based T-Mobile USA.

The DOJ filed a lawsuit last month to block the $39 billion deal, saying a merger would hurt competition in the wireless market and remove an important challenger in T-Mobile. AT&T, which announced merger plans in March, says the acquisition would create jobs and allow the company to expand 4G wireless coverage.

On Thursday, Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., in a letter urged Obama to settle the lawsuit and approve AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile. Fifteen additional Democrats signed onto the bill, stating their belief that the merger would create jobs.

While a recent study suggested the deal could eventually create more than 55,000 jobs in the communications industry, AT&T itself has said it expects to save $10 billion by "consolidating platforms, customer care centers and headquarters organization." Opponents say these statements just don't jibe.

4. How would merging and consolidating create jobs? Are they going to
keep everyone employed, including redundant positions, PLUS hire more? That makes no sense.

6. Well, SOMETHING'S going on...T-Mobile just made me an offer I can't refuse.

I've been month to month since last November on T-Mobile,
looking for a better deal.

Apples and oranges, no matter what, the offers from all
of the phone service providers were not cheaper than
T-Mobile...so I just paid month to month.

Today THEY called, again, but this time with an offer
that slashed $55/month off of my current plan.

I went for it, but now I'm back in the 2 year contract
scheme...
