Grandparents with webcam become new online stars

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_GRANDPARENTS_ON_YOUTUBE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2011-09-15-18-09-44

McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) -- An unsuspecting Oregon couple's ascendance to YouTube stardom happened by accident.

Grandparents Esther and Bruce Huffman unwittingly pressed "record" on their new laptop's web camera in mid-August.

The resulting video, recorded without their knowledge, captures them goofing around, worrying about wrinkles in their faces and questioning whether the camera is working.

4. This becoming a hit says something about our "youth and celebrity" obsessed culture
These gentle people hit us at all types of levels and fulfill many of the basic emotional needs common to us as people and almost entirely ignored by the media.

Clearly there is a huge gulf between us as a people in reality and the way in which we are depicted in the media.

6. At what point in the aging process does one become "cute"?
I see a lot of comments about this video that describe this couple as "cute," and as a soon-to-be old person that kind of bothers me. It seems a bit patronizing and condescending, just the way children are treated when they are doing something unusual. "Oh, look, she's trying on Mommy's shoes, isn't she adorable?" How is that different from, "Oh, look at the old people trying to figure out a webcam, aren't they adorable?" When I'm old, which will be soon, I don't want anyone telling me I'm "cute" if I get flummoxed by technology.

8. Grumpy old codger is also something people say
Just yell at everyone to get off your lawn and no one will confuse you with anything cute.

22. well, I think in this particular case they *are* cute, regardless of their age
I mean, that guy such is a hoot, and so sweet! His wife is one lucky woman.

I don't think that in this case "cute" is meant condescendingly. They are a really lovely couple, and most of us would apply the descriptive "cute" to any couple who's so sweet to each other.

I definitely see your point, though. "Cute" is often used for older people and I do think it's often kind of patronizing.

24. Ageing is not for wimps. My age is a constant source of amusement for my kids, and
now grandchildren. "Mom's older than dirt." "You text so SLOW!" And current favorite, the day my daughter rushed to bang on my door asking "Where the hell have you been? I called and you didn't answer." Uh, right here at home, alone, enjoying myself.

I still work, am raising grandchildren and barely 60, so it feels wierd to be treated like I'm already 80+++. I laugh and roll with it because it means they love me.

None that I know anyway!
These folks act exactly like my parents.
I adore the way my Dad still flirts with my Mom
and how she acts like he is a silly.
Beautiful stuff.
